I downloaded the ultravnc programs
the server and the viewer. I am not sure
exactly how to set them up?

I am going crazy but not giving up.

When I bring up the VNC Server :
it says accept socket connections
Password?( if this is where I put in my own )
I have done that but everytime I bring it up there
is more x's than I have password?

When I bring up the VNC Viewer:
What do I type in the VNC Server:
(Host: : port) ?

Thanks Milt

The XXX's in the password field are default....just erase them and type in your own password.

If during setup you didnt change any settings you would just put in the computer name or ip address into the viewer in order to connect, then you will be promted for the password.

If you changed the port/display settings to something other than the default you would type the computer name with a colon then the port numer. for example
server001:1
or
192.168.1.1:1

And finally, if you enabled the web server it would be the same method as above, except you add a few numbers to the port, for example
http://server001:5801 (The last two digits being the port/display number) or
http://192.168.1.1:5801

If you need any other help feel free to ask.

Where do I get the computers name? Is it the ip of the computer I am trying to connect with?

If you changed the port/display settings to something other than the default you would type the computer name with a colon then the port numer. for example
server001:1
or
192.168.1.1:1 <Do I replace this with the pc ip and where do I get the port #?(do I add .1:5801)

http://server001:5801 (The last two digits being the port/display number) or

http://192.168.1.1:5801

also when I bring up the properties of vnc that is where I put in the password it seems to go back to bunch of x's when I come back to the properties.

Don't bother with names for now. Just deal with IP addresses. Converting IP addresses to names is an advanced concept which can be dealt with later.

VNC opens two ports: 5800 and 5900. Port 5800 is used by clients connecting via a web browser, port 5900 is used when connecting using the VNC Viewer program.

To connect using VNC Viewer you need to do the following:
1) On the target machine, start the VNC Server
2) On the client machine, launch VNC Viewer
3) Tell VNC Viewer to connect to the IP address of the target machine.

On the VNC Server you will be required to configure a password. This is for security. You don't want all and sundry connecting to your computer. The password will be obscured with asterisk symbols (*). This is, again, for reasons of security. You don't want all and sundry seeing the password.

If there is a firewall or NAT router between the VNC Client and the VNC Server then make sure that traffic on port TCP 5900 is allowed.

Read http://www.realvnc.com/faq.html and http://www.realvnc.com/documentation.html to learn how to use VNC. Don't worry that the documentation is for RealVNC - the concepts you need to learn are universal across all flavours of VNC.

No.

Did you read the documentation which I mentioned above?

All you need to provide is the IP address.

Don't worry about extra sessions.

Don't worry about extra displays.

Don't worry about simultaneous connections.

For now, just concentrate on getting one display working. Once you've done that, then you can delve into the arcana surrounding changing the port details.

If you're both behind firewalls then you both need to allow traffic on port 5900 (and whatever other ports your firewall tells you VNC is trying to use).

Are the appropriate ports opened on the client computer? As Demon mentioned you would need to forward port 5900 on the router (This would be the router/computer your trying to connect to) to the PC you want to connect to.

A good site to use to test this would be grc.com and the ShieldsUp Test
Don't know if this link will work: https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

Then do a scan on user specified ports by typing in 5900 in the text area and click on "User Specified Custom Port Probe".

When that port is open you should not have any problems connecting.

Sad this is my scan results from the site you gave me

Probing Your Port 5900

The GRC server is attempting to establish a TCP
connection to Port 5900 of your computer located
at Internet at IP address 68.43.105.1:

Total elapsed testing time: 4.996 seconds

Port
Status Protocol and Application

5900
Stealth Unknown Protocol for this port
Unknown Application for this port

The result of the port probe is shown above.

I am wondering if I am doing something wrong because most every one I hear has this utra vnc program loves it. I wish someone could just tell me step by step where to go? Even if there is another free vnc I would try it. But probably do the same thing. We are able to use the xp remote assistance, but we want this program cause it is supposed to be better and get into win98se.
please help me I pulling out my last hairs. Milt

Sounds like the port is being blocked either by your router or firewall software or possibly both.

mschroe919, tecgod13 is right, the router/pc your trying to connect to is blocking the connection. Read through the manual of the router to forward port 5900 to the PC you want to control. When this is done, retest the port with GRC.com to make sure it is Open.

When the test reports "Stealth" this means the router/firewall is blocking the connection
When the test reports "Closed" this means that the VNC Server is not running, or the PC is off.
When the test reports "Open" this means that everything is OK to go and you should not have any other problems.

Unfortunatly I cannot provide step by step instructions for the computer/router due to many different factors (Different makes/models of routers, different firewall software, different Operating system requirements such as XP's default firewall and etc.)

Once you get the port forwarding to the appropriate PC you should be fine, but you need to read the manual on how to do this.

I still am trying to figure out how to open my 5900 through the outer . Unfortunatly we don't have the same router so it was as if he could tell me to do this and do that. But we are 95% of the wya there and all because you all didn't give up on me.
