Post Posted: Tue Feb 17, 2004 4:47 pm   Post subject: DVD Duplicators Reply with quote Back to top

I think the MPAA and the RIAA has made everyone paranoid. I want to build or buy a box that makes an identical image/copy/clone of a disk in one drive to a blank in another drive. I've searched online and there are services that will do it. There are companies that sell these duplicators but none will even tell you how much they cost unless you send them an email and tell them you life history.

I know that music cd's and movie dvd's are "pressed" instead of "burned". Does that mean that you cannot make an identical copy of those type of disks? I'm not trying to pirate music cd's or movie dvd's, I just want something that will make an identical bit for bit copy of a cd or dvd.

Thank you.

home cd recorders only hold about 4GB of data, dvd's hold about 9GB of data. the only way you are going to get a perfect 1:1 copy is if you have industry standard equipment, and good luck finding that...

one of the problems i see is that most dvds with video content are dual layered, and AFAIK, the first consumer dual layer dvd burners won't be out until spring. that reduces your capacity almost by half, meaning you probably wouldn't be able to do a bit for bit copy of most discs.

Simply not true. Single layer DVDs hold 4.7gb of data. And CD's only hold 700mb of data.

You can copy them, but as you said, professional ones are pressed.

The biggest problem with DVDs is that the discs they come on are dual layered, where as the standard DVD-R is single layer, therefore can only hold half as much. There are tools that can shrink them, but you will loose quality unless you remove stuff like extras, subtitles and different sound formats.

I have used DVD Shrink to successful backup a DVD, and lost no quality because I removed everything except the movie. That includes menus and stuff. It puts the files into a directory, and all you need to do is burn these to DVD (maintaining the folders AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS (I think that is what they are called) of course) and it works like a charm. Of course, you can select and choose what you want, even to the point of ripping only the dolby digital or 5.1 sound channel.

I hope this helps, and I haven't rambled too much Razz

[edit] Ok, so while I wa typing this I was beaten to the punch about the size thingy by a few people... Oh well... I leave it there anyways. [/edit]

I should of added, DVD Shrink also works with DVD Region Killer so that you can watch any DVDs you have bought from overseas. And the best part: Both Apps are free (DVD Region Killer is from the people who <originally> bought you CloneCD, a quick google search will find it).

A dvd rom holds about 4.0 GiB but there are different standards who hold more (but you can't buy them yet).
Most movie dvd hold about 9GB but some are pressed in ways that only hold 4.7GB or more than 20GB
