ok - now for some of the COOL stuff - youknow - the stuff you figure out because you spend WAY TOO MUCH TIME on the computer?

Panther allows me to put a desktop folder into the DOCK -
I OPT/CLICK - viola! ::tee hee::

Click on folder and:
Command-Shift-H opens the Home folder
Command-Shift-U opens the Utilities folder

I also have a habit of having about a zillion windows open - F9 is a slick way to reduce and arrange them~

You make me want to install Panther.

Except for the fact that I have no mac hardware (other than an old 15 inch monitor, anyway...)

Fancy that. Sad

I just found this out today... fancy that. If you hold down shift while doing it the transition is slower.

click and hold brings up the contents of the folder as a menu. that's what i do with my Applications folder. that's my primary program launching method. it takes a few seconds, however for the list to come up. which is annoying as all get out.

Oh for christ sake, I had to pay money for that feature! I bought a little haxie called Application Launcher I think, basically does the exact same thing except it's more like Windows' start menu with shortcuts to launch programs.

not too many. i generally have safari, mail, calander, stickies itunes and terminal open but minimized.

if i'm doing photoshop i usually only have a couple of images open at a time. possibly some bit torrent windows and fire, an aim client. if i'm plugged in i'll run the folding@home client, but shut it off if i'm running on batteries.

if you have some cpu power to spare and you don't mind losing expose you can set your desktop background to whatever screensaver you have chosen by running this in Terminal:
Code: Select all

/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background &

if nothing else, it's a great way to make your friends "ooh" and "aah".

[edit] oh yeah, i almost forgot. if you want to use your cpu for real work, you can run
Code: Select all
killall ScreenSaverEngine

to get your normal desktop back.
[/edit]

Here is a stitch -

open the TERMINAL file int he applications folder
Cut & Paste:

cat /usr/share/calendar/calendar.history | grep "LOTR"

Enjoy the LOTR timeline.

interestingly enough (i guess if you find this kind of stuff interesting), the LOTR timeline is not in FreeBSD's /usr/share/calendar/caledar.history. i wonder if this is something they added at apple, huh, odd.
