I am being shipped one of these for free (part of my payment for building a computer, gotta love it), and am really wondering if the "jerkiness" is THAT noticeable. I have read review after review, and they never really hit on that subject. I hope its the 33% faster version. *sigh*

I have a Microsoft Optical Wheel Mouse, and have neer, ever noticed any jerkiness. It is just 100% smooth as a baby's a__!! My optical works so well I will never go back to a ball mouse again. And I get this using the USB-PS2 adapter, because I don't have enough USB ports to have my mouse installed as a USB mouse. It technically should be smoother if it is used as a USB mouse.

I have the origional MS optical.. the plane jane intellimouse with intelliEye. No choppyness here.
I have found, however, that the surface you are using plays a major role in the tracking. If the surface you are using is rather plain (like a white piece of paper) the mouse will jump across the screen like a 4 year old eating candy. The way these mice work is by sampling the surface a couple times a second. It then compares consecuative (spelling, sorry) pictures to determine how far the mouse has moved. consequently, if your surface is bland, it has some trouble. I am using a custom corian mouse pad to make it glide smooth. Its got a texture pattern, so the mouse has no problems tracking.
Another good thing to mention is stay away from shiny surfaces. They too can confuse the hell out of your mouse.
also, try to increase your mouse rate to get smoother results.

I made it myself from some scraps I had lying around. And yes, you can have one [^]
Its a square pad of corian with rounded corners, sanded flat. Pretty nifty. Doubles as a hot plate and you can wash it in the dishwasher. I'll take some pictures if I can get a hold of a camera.
IM me, email, or ICQ me if your intrested :-D

I have a logitech mouseman wheel (not optical)
i made my mousepad out of a brand new belt for a treadmill that i acquired someplace [ ]
it has all of these raised spines that make for an extremely precise mousing surface, and between the spines, it has all of these little dimples, that catch all of the garbage that gets on my desk, and keeps it from getting caught up in my mouse
it even has this industrial nylon backing which never wears out
the only downside to making my mousepad out of this material, is how freakin tuff this stuff is, makes it pretty difficult to trim it to "exact" specifications, whenever i make one

Do you have a mass quantity of that? I could find some people to buy that. (the rubber matt stuff)..... As long as it tracks well, and isn't a huge effort to move the mouse on =)

I have a small roll of the stuff, about 2 feet wide, and maybe 10 feet long
it kicks ass ! If I ever get the chance to pickup another one for free, I'm all over it !
I'll tell you what, email me your address, and i'll send you a 1 ft length, and you can demo it around see what you can get for it, and i'll see if my source can get me another one

Hey if it is rubber you want I've got a set of worn out tires. I don't know if it makes a good mousing surface or not but you'll probably never wear it out.

I finally got the mouse, and damn! This mouse is perfectly accurate and smooth. I noticed no problems with it losing track unless I moved it from side to side (the right side of my desk) in under a second, then it does this little semi circle. In games, there is no problem aiming now, because the sample rate is much higher. I also love the fact that I don't HAVE to use a mouse, and my leg will work just fine. I love this mouse, and will never go back! |
