|
I got a linksys 5 port hub, I open it up, use it, but only one port works!
I pop the modem in the uplink then I plug it in port 5 and it works with one computer, but when I try to share it with another computer in port 4 and It doesn't work, I noticed the lights don't blink either. Could it just be faulty or could it be a firewall blocking all connections from sharing? Like windows service or somethin? I turned off all my firewall services. I think its faulty |

Uh...you said Hub, right?
I guess you don't have a router? Which comp is providing routing services? DHCP services?
If yer just plugging yer cable modem to the hub, the modem will seek out the first comp to assign an IP to. I guess you only have a 1 IP service? If so, just hooking up a hub isn't gonna get you there as the other comps will try to get the services from yer cable but yer not authorized fer more than 1 IP. You can either get a router or use a second NIC and some NAT software. You can use ICS built in to XP fer the short term but don't expect a lot from it. |

internet access or not... the hub would still perform as a hub. When you say it doesn't blink... does it at least light-up to show a connection? If not... maybe a bad cable, a crossover cable, bad nic, or a faulty hub.
Try moving down the ports on the hub with the PC that works to ensure that all ports work. Then swap cables and try again. The the cable and hub prove to work... then i'd say it's a nic issue.
But Bam is right with his IP/router comments. |

I don't want a network...I just want the hub to provide internet access to multiple computers, and I don't have a sharing nic...oh...and road runner supplies me with 3 ips
Heres a pic I just made (AWESOME DRAWINGS ON PAINT!) of how I had it set up....

Might want to fix that link. How many Dynamic Ip addresses does your ISP allow you to have. |

He's allowed 3 IPs from RoadRunner.
Did you check yer IP on the comps?
You know the drill...
1. Windows key + R
2. Type in "cmd" (without the quotes) and press return.
3. Type in "ipconfig /release" and press return.
4. Type in "ipconfig /renew" and press return.
What is the IP address fer the other comps now?

Yeh I know that ipconfig /all junk and everything...My nic on the motherboard wouldn't release an ip after I moved the computer back and fourth a couple times, so I had to pop a nic in there and use it. Pretty old one too and It doesnt have the capabilities to handle all of my bandwidth |

I would have thought that a router would have been more appropriate for your useage. |

Spending $20 on a router is just too difficult isn't it? |

that's ok he doesn't have a firewall either, by the look of it, so if you want you can just pop onto his systems and fix it yourself |
