Post Posted: Mon Nov 24, 2003 6:04 pm   Post subject: Connecting DSL to my network/router Reply with quote Back to top

I just got (activated tonight) SBC/Yahoo DSL service here.

Until this, I'd been using a cable modem (plugged into my Linksys router, which is in turn plugged into my switch, which is connected to all the computers in my network - obviously).

My intention was that when I got the DSL, I'd just unplug the cable modem from the router, plug the DSL modem into the router, and I'd be good to go (in theory my entire network would never even notice a difference).

Tonight I ran into a snag, and was wondering if anyone could offer suggestions.

Apparently I need to "connect" to DSL each time I use it (using the username and password I signed up for). To get registered, I've temporarily hooked the DSL modem straight to my main computer (which is, therefore, off the rest of the network).

It's all installed and ready to go.

But if I connect the DSL modem to the router, how will the router know to connect and send that user information?

How do I set this up for my network?

I already called SBC, and their answer was "we don't support routers"... <deep sigh>

Thoughts? Ideas? Prayers? Cruel laughter, perhaps?

Well, it's not exactly a dial-up connection like a regular modem.

As it is, my router has an option (that I can reach by going to http://192.168.1.1 on my network) that allows me to choose login information (including a radio box where I choose either PPPoE, RAS, or Disable - it was set to Disable when I was using the cable modem, for the DSL I changed it to PPPoE).

Then it also allows me to put in the login name and password. It also gives me an option of "Connect on Demand" (where it would be disconnected except when in use), or "Keep Alive" (and a box for entering the redial period in seconds).

And by some miracle, it actually worked! Smile

Of course, part of my problem at the beginning, was that to register/activate the service, I had to connect the DSL modem to one PC (directly), and install their software, and go through their wizard first. Luckily it wasn't too hard to uninstall that stuff again when I got the modem connected to the router instead of directly to the PC.

Make sure you have your mtu set to 1492 on your router otherwise your email will not work (had this problem when i set up sbc/yahoo dsl with a linksys router) at least not on a microsoft os installed box
