Who uses it, and which one do you use?? I for one haven't used any AV since I upgraded to Win2K. The version of McAfee I have is only for Win9X, and I haven't got around to getting a new package since about July. I am thinking about it now, but I want to see what you guys use, or if you guys use it at all before I buy anything.

I use the AV software built into System Suite 3.0 from Ontrack

I use it sparingly (scan on demand only) about once a week i do an update of everything in the Suite ( there is an app called Easy Update built right into it that will download and install all of the updates for the entire suite, not just the AV stuff) The sweet thing about this AV, is that by default it's not on, you can go set it to be intrusive, but i wouldn't you usually have an idea of when you might have gotten fragged, so you can just set it to do a deep scan before you goto bed one night, and get up the next day, and see what all it did

there are 9 components to System Suite 3.0, I don't use all of them, but the ones I DO use work pretty Kick Ass.

anyway, it's $60 for first time buyers of this product( that's on their website, you could probably find it at bestbuy or someplace else cheaper), but you get the full suite, PLUS you get Powerdesk Pro ( a new windows explorer without IE, this thing is Sweet-Ass-Sweet it has all kinds of features windows explorer doesn't including a viewer plugin, and a built in zip feature)

you also get a 1/2 price purchase price on anything new they come out with down the road. I have owned all 3 versions of system suite, and it is one of the best products I've ever used. ( I've also owned all but one version of powerdesk)

Powerdesk is pretty bueno.. My nephew swears by it. It would let you view the Win9x cabs.
I was using AVP Toolkit for my scanning. It worked good. I haven't run a scanner for like a year now.. (Format too often for anything to get through.) [:8}

I use the McAfee online scanning thing, more out of laziness and last minute rush than any actual knowledge of which is better.

Its web based and I can run it from any computer, but it was 19.95 for just a year and that was their special.

I'm looking for other good suggestions as well.

I haven't used a virus scanner or any virus software on my desktop since...well ever. Its always kickin in when I was playin games or doin something important. [(!]

on my LAPTOP, however, I use MacAfee. It was bundled with my laptop, so i have 3 year support with it. All my mission critical stuff is on my laptop, so that gets a full scan once a week, and smaller scannes at night (if i'm lazy and leave it on).

I've never used any on my home machine. But on my 'work' machines I run Norton 7.01

I took a look today, and the virus agent in System Suite is provided by Trend Micro

those guys who make PC-cillin

like i said though, the reasons I use that are:

A) it's bundled into something i would have bought anyway,
B) it's default setting is scan on demand ( no performance slowdown that way, but also no automatic protection... which i can live without)
C) everytime i've checked for an update after a "Virus scare" hits the internet, they have a new update that catches whatever new scare is out there, along with a ton of new stuff that didn't make the headlines
D) Easy Update.. no having to download tha damn .SIG files myself. or surrender my machine because some crappy "auto update program" has sucked the life out of my PC during whatever time it takes to download the new .sig files (like norton liveworks used to do)
E) it's never hosed my machine like McCrappy has done to so many of it's users (they release bad merge and .sig files almost as often as that russian guy finds new security holes in M$ products)
F) it integrates into the right click menu, so whenever you download something new, you can just right click on it before running it, and choose "Virus Scanner" and it scans fully and automatically for you

Sounds good to me Brain. McAfee used to give some real problems. My brother and Mom are both still running the same version I had, and they don't seem to be haveing problems. Both of them live in the country and have 28.8 as the fastest possible dial up connection. They probably don't download the new updates at all.

Yes !

you can do that right from the right click menu too, all you have to do is click a checkmark that says "scan into subfolders" you also have to go into the properties of SS 3.0 and go down to the bottom entry to configure it to automatically scan into archives... and whatever else you want it to scan into automatically
