Here is the problem. I have a 20 gig and a 40 gig. I RAIDed them, so now half of the 40 gig is not being used. Is there a way to still use the remaining 20 gig of the 40? Or is it not possible. |

There is no way to make use of the additional space, short of dropping them off the RAID controller and switching back to individual drive setups.
You'd probably be better off buying a second (matching, if possible) 20gb HDD, and using the two 20gb drives in the RAID setup, with the 40gb as a lone drive for non-critical storage. But that would mean spending more $$.

Why do you use two different(as in make) drives to RAID. Is that really faster than just plain? |

I was afraid of that...its just as I thought. One more question, you can still just have the harddrives plugged into the RAID plugs without having them RAIDed? I would just prefer to have all 4 of my IDE devices to be on their own cable. |

You can have the drives on the RAID controller individually. Just set them up as single drive array's.
I also wouldn't recommend different drive array's like you have described. Have you tested it's speed at all?? I once ran an ATA100 20GB Western Digital drive with a ATA66 20GB Maxtor. Both were 2MB cache drives that spun at 7200RPM, but in a RAID array together, they performed only marginally better than when together. I then bought a second Maxtor 20GB ATA66, and the speed was amazing.

I havent tested any speeds. They are both Western Digital ATA100 7200 rpm drives, so I assume it wouldnt have the same problem as you were with your two different drives.
Thanks for the info, I wasnt sure how to set them up on the RAID channels. They really dont mention using just 1 drive in the manual... (: |

You will have the same problem. It's not the differnce in manufactorer but the difference in layout of the harddisk itself what is a problem. And a 20GB harddisk has a very different layout than a 40GB. Besides i doubt that Western Digital really makes ATA100 drives. Rumours have it that the miss some error checking to be really called ATA100 |

You always want to have the exact same drives in a RAID array, for one, the different drives will act differently so the array wont be balanced, you can equally stripe something when the capacities are mismatched. But, if your raid controllers supports you can use JBOD (just a bunch of disks) and it will basically give you a "60 gig" spanned volume drive.. my .02cents
