I'm thinking of buying a flatbed scanner. Can anyone recommend one that works well with Mandrake 8.0?

Don't know which scanner is good but what i have understood is that sane-rpms(drivers for scanners) in cooker are a lot beter is than the those in 8.0

You could also check the sane site at http://www.mostang.com/sane/sane-backends.html for which scanners are any good.
