Post Posted: Fri Jun 13, 2003 7:38 am   Post subject: FTP Through a router?!? Reply with quote Back to top

I have an SMC 7004AWBR wireless router, and I want to run an ftp server through it.

I can connect to the ftp server, the username and password is verified, and then it always times out on the list command. The error is :425 Unable to open the data connection. I am using CERBERUS as my ftp server running on Win2K Pro.

I have port 21 forwarded to the ftp server. I have tried enabling DMZ for the ftp server in the router setup with no joy.

Is there some other port I need to forward?

Whoops. Guess I should have mentioned that I already have port 21 forwarded to the ftp server.

Straight from RFC 793

ftp-data 20/tcp File Transfer [Default Data]
ftp-data 20/udp File Transfer [Default Data]
ftp 21/tcp File Transfer [Control]
ftp 21/udp File Transfer [Control]

You prob won't need the UDP ports, just 20 and 21

I have both the TCP and UDP ports 20 and 21 forwarding to the ftp server. I still get the same error: 425 unable to open the data connection.

Do I need to be dealing with PASV transfers?

It depends on your FTP server...

I'd do some checking to see what mode of FTP it runs under... active or passive.

you might need to forward more than just port 21

with my Linksys Router, running GuilFTPd , I have to forward port 21 and the entire range of ports 50001 - 50100

Then certain ftp clients will need PASV ftp enabled on their end in order to work properly.
