SETI under linux, BE or windows?? I am running command line under Win2K, but I have Linux Mandrake 7.0 on my PC, would the Linux Client be faster??

the Be client isn't fully developed yet ( mine kept losing data. everytime i'd reboot it would think it needed to re-download data for the first time) PLUS i couldn't set it to automatically start the processes on boot. ( you have to start em from the command line)
out of the 2 remaining choices, i heard linux was faster. that said, i don't know if you can run 2 seperate instances of seti with diffrent CPU affiniity. SO if you're using an SMP setup, you'll have to check into that.
i also don't know if there is anything like "Seti Driver" for linux (that little proggie KICKS ASS!)
i'm runnin mine under win2k with one each mapped to each of my CPU's it turns out a couple of WU's in just over 10 hours.
sorry i wasn't more help with the linux stuff, but i'm not that guy [ ]

I figured you would be here with Be input, your the Be man. I don't know much about Linux at all, I just have it to play around wiht, and I almost never boot into it. It has been installed for like a month, and I haven't got my networking straightened out, so Linux can't access the internet yet. I am curious though, Linux is faster at certain things than windows, perhaps SETI is one. Maybe if I get the internet connection up and running, I'll give it a test.

yeah, that's me
I think it's kind of appropriate that the only Dog in our kennel who's name starts with "B" happens to run Be *L*
well, if you don't have dual CPU's, and if you DO have a broadband connection, i'd say jump into linux and try it out. you have nothing to lose except some time off your WU's
i just thought i'd point out some stuff to think about before you decide for sure to move all your Seti activities over to linux

The problem with benchmarking is diff seti units take diff amounts of time to process, so you'd have to run the same unit on both platforms for an accurate test (on same system). |

Now how would I do that???
Or should I just time the total time for say ten units on both OS's and average, see which one is fastest over a ten WU average??
I still haven't solved my network connection problem in Linux, so I don't have an internet connection, yet. When I do, maybe it is time to see what Linux can do.

Hummer010, what seems to be the problem with Linux and the network? E-mail me with the issues and I'll see what I can do. I'm not proclaiming to be an expert but I've gone through alot of shit with Linux. Personally I've never tried to run SETI on Linux but I might just have to give it a go. As far as testing the same WU just download one and make a copy of it on a FAT/FAT32 partition and then when you get SETI under linux working copy that WU to Linux and Windows2K for testing.

Linux Client is a 'little bit' faster than Windows, but is by no means as fast as the MAC Client. It is by far the fastest I know of....

I have no idea what my netwrok problem is/was in linux, but in my O/C'ing attempts with a PCI bus of 41, I hosed linux. I had forgotten that linux was on an older hard drive, my main drive didn't seem to have a problem, and then I tried to boot into linux, and we are talking super corrupt. In the next couple of days I am going to a little partition shuffling and re-install linux un my main drive, and leave the old 2 giger for backups etc.

Ah yes the ol' OCed/Linux corruption problem. A nasty little thing to say the least. Most of the time Linux will fail to install on OCed PCs. Oh well live and learn I guess.
