I fancy a go with Linux but don't want to total my Windows setup.
I currently have a 30GB disk, split down into a 2GB C partition (where Win98 lives), a D partition for all my stuff and an E partition for Windows CAB files and other backups. (D & E fill up the rest of the disk equally).
If I backup my E drive files, can I drop to DOS and fdisk this down into 2 smaller partitions? (1 for my Win backups and the other for Linux)
I'm pretty sure of myself on this but didn't want to go ahead and find something freaky had unexpectedly happened to my boot record and/or C partition.

That sounds good as long as you pay attention to what you are doing with fdisk. When you install Mandrake, you will have to slice that linux partition up.

I was planning on using the LWD guide (naturally Big Smile) to install me some Linux, after having used fdisk to simply "shave off" some of my E partition for Linux use.
Is deleting the E partition, then creating 2 smaller ones in the space the right way to do it?

(Sorry is the post is badly spaced but the preview for the posts is fudged up - i get code instead of an actual preview)

You don't need to mess with fdisk. You can slice up your E: within the LM8 install. Just designate this partition to linux and slice it up as desired. The partitioner from the LM8 distro is much better than fdisk.

Keep in mind that you will need at least 1gig for the partition where LM8 is to be installed, make it 1.5 and you will have about 500megs free after the install completes...

What about the FAT32 formatting. I was expecting to lose the contents which is why I'd backed it up but wanted to put those files back on one of the smaller partitions.
| c fat32-2GB | d fat 32-13GB | e fat32-13GB | <-- current config

| c same | d same | e fat32- big as poss | f linux-whatever's needed | <-- desired

I don't want to designate the whole e partition to linux but steal some space to make another partition for linux. Can this be done from the install like you suggest?

The Mandrake disk partitioner allows you to make FAT32 partitions.

Last brain-dead question (hopefully) before I get to install Mandrake...
I've got the iso images. What CD options do I want to use? Do I want ISO9660 or Joliet, mode1: cdrom or mode2: cdrom-xa???
I don't have a clue about these things, I only ever burn music cd's!
I'm using Adaptec EasyCD Creator 4.

Thanks everybody for answering my previous lame questions - I haven't even made it to the LWD newbies guide yet [Sticking out Tongue]

I don't know Easy CD Creator. You will need to burn the ISOs in ISO9660 mode.
I burned mine with WinOnCD3.8. Just choose "Burn Image" and drag the ISO onto the CD, that's all. But ISO9660 will do just fine even with Easy CD Creator.

LM8#s own partitioner works just like Partition Magic under Windows. It will (by choice) take only the free space of a disc. So no worry your data will be kept alive.
