Fathertyme's Router blows big red chunks all over the desk, tyme and tyme again. Oh What can Fathertyme do? Fathertyme is fond of long downloads, which means routers that are prone to flooding, are probably not a good idea.
Anyways, I was hoping some of you more intellectual types out there could name me some not too expensive, but definitely something worthwhile in the router arena...
the first person to mention linksys gets to feel !!!ALL!!! the anger and frustration I'm holding back right now...
thanks |

How much do you want to spend on a router? You could put yer own together with one of yer comps, LRP, a NIC, and a switch. You could add a lot more NICs and ferget the switch but it all depends on how many comps you need to connect...
I'm happy with my DLink 704P router. It's pretty easy to configure. I just don't like the fact that the print server doesn't work right fer me. But maybe I just don't have the right configuration yet... |

I thought about the build my own philosophy... but then I get into that... power ratio thing... to make it worth running (because of electricity costs), it would have to be so powerful....
I end up with powerhouses that are way too big to run as a router
so... at least until I get enough computers (10-15) running at one tyme to justify the power requirement a dedicated firewall machine would cost me... I need a smaller solution
Dlink 704P added to my list of possibles.... hows the logging on that thang? I've heard it could be hard to do port forwarding, and the such |

Fergot to add...
You could try use yer current router as a switch in the LRP setup. Mmmm...maybe that wouldn't be a good idea as the router itself could be flakey but it's worth a try. |

Port forwarding works just fine on the router. Logging can be assigned to a comp on the network.
Fer the LRP route, all you really need is just an old mobo (could have intergrated video), PS, RAM, floppy, and a NIC. Obviously mouse, monitor, keyboard would have to be thrown in there just to get it up and running then you could snag it out of there. I'm sure you could hunt up an old setup somewhere... |

I like my Netgear RT311. Pretty much the same as the RT314, just with out the built in switch.
I have had mine for like 2 years at least and nothing major gone wrong. Exept the time I screwed up my filters and locked myself out. But that is another story. |

While we're on the subject of routers, anyone have any idea if those Microsoft wireless ones are any good? They have some pretty good deals on those and am considering it. |

I wouldn't think that a 486 would take up much power. They have versions of the LRP project that run off of floppies as well. I believe Coyote Linux does that.
The port forwarding works fine on the D-Link. My port forwarding problems was my own stupidity. Disregard all messages I posted about having problems with port forwarding.
The Dlink 704p has been working pretty good lately. |

Do you need a hardware firewall to? If you do a can recomend Intertex. Pretty solid stuff. I'm real happy with mine.
Good luck.
