I know a few of you ordered this router the other day so somebody should be able to answer this question.
I went into the the routers setup and then into Virtual Server so that I could redirect ports 80 and 22 to my Unix Server. I enabled these ports and gave them the Ip address of my unix server and restarted the router. But when I try to secure shell into my server using the my Wan Ip address, it just eventually times out.
Is there something else I need to set.
It sure would be nice if you could setup the Dynamic DNS on the router to use any Service. |

I'm not sure I understand what the problem is. As I understand it you have similar troubles to mine. I'll describe my problem and how I fixed it.
After setting up firewall/router I could not connect to my www/ftp server from INSIDE the lan/firewall. the http://www.ourhouse.d2g.com adress did not work. It worked if I used http://192.168.0.2 (the IP of the server).
FIX:
This is on a Windows system, mind you.
I opened the HOST file ("hosts" it's called - with NO file type name) and looked at the settings there. This file translates adresses.
It looks like this:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1995 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows NT.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost
So I added:
192.168.0.2 ourhouse.d2g.com #internal IP - domain
NOTE: i do NOT remember right now (at work) if there have to be a www and ftp before ourhouse (see above). I think NOT.
Hope this helps!

This boggled me for a while. You need to reboot your router. The problem is, I'm not sure where there is an easy way to do that. So what I do is enable a DMZ, disable a DMZ (I don't want one after all) and then click on the reboot button, since it will only allow you to reboot after a change. Voila, problem solved. |

It asked me to reboot when I made the changes. At which time I did.
I can secure shell to the server using the internal Ip address but I cannot secure shell to it from outside the firewall. Which tells me the router is not doing its job by redirecting the ports to the server.
I will try and reboot the router again, when I get home. |

Heh. Quite easier than my solution. If that was what it was...

So what you are telling me is that you are able ssh into your unix server by redirecting port 22 to your unix server on the router.
I tried rebooting several times and no go. I even put the damn thing in the DMZ and I still cant ssh into the server from the internet. This is really pissing me off.
My only other choice now is to take the router out of the equation and set my server to get a dhcp address from RR. If I still cant ssh into it then I know it is the server. I dont know why it would make a difference. I can secure shell into the server from the lan. |

Sent a message to D-Link about the Dynamic Dns settings for this router. I asked them if they had any plans to update the firmware so that we could use other Dynamic DNS services on the router.
They basically said NO. Not that it is any big deal but I think we should get a big petition going to make them change it. |

Well I hooked up my server directly to the cable modem and I have no problems secure shelling into my server. The damn router just dont want to redirect those damn ports to my server. Really pissing me off. |

Nope, was just saying my redirecting was working, I don't have a *nix box up and running at the moment. |

Unplug the power and wait a few seconds. Plug the power back in and you should be able to log in. That happened to me once... |

Can you redirect ports to a different machine, other than the unix box? |
