I've got a Tbird 1.2 that I had OC'd, but backed down to 1.2- with SETI crunching It's running at 49-51 degrees C. Ouch, that's hot!

It has a Thermaltake Volcano II with stock fan. I removed the thermal tape and am using some no name brand silicone.

I have Antec case which is at 30 dgrees C - one fan in, one fan out.

Any suggestions to bring the temp down? I am looking at a Swifttech MC462-A or should I try a Delta fan on the Volcano?

Thanks- Scrap Iron

You need more case fans for that kind of OC'ing. Here are my suggestions: one fan in the front on the bottom, two on the side blowing on the AGP/PCI slots, on fan on the back near the top in addition to the power supply fan. I have heard some people say to put an additional fan on top but the others say that is wrong as it breaks the 'S' air flow inside the case.

T-birds are hot chips to begin with, but I think AMD says they can go much higher, like 90 or something. Anyways, more airflow in the case and get some good goop. You might see a 3 to 5 degree drop just using some better goop. If you can swing it, place your case as close to the airconditioning vents as possible.

HSF technology is pretty simple, but no air cooled HSF combo can cool below the ambient temp. so the lower the case temp the better the overall cooling.

1. As a temporary solution, you might try backing the voltage down. A lot of T-birds will run well under stock voltage, even overclocked. At your desired speed, step the voltage down, one notch at a time until it becomes unstable. Then go back up one and run 3dmark or your stability test of choice.

2. I have the 60+ CFM delta on my MC-462, and it is very loud. Can't beat the temps, though. 1000Mhz T-bird@1473, 1.92v. 40C with 30C case temps.

Thanks for the advice everyone- I will add more case fans and try the Artic Silver II goop (what the heck?).

I got sidetracked by the OCZ Gladiator HSF, but just about everyone over at the [H]ard Forums went ballastic if that name (OCZ) is mentioned.

Neo- how is the noise with the Delta?

OH yea the [H] people absolutely HATE OCZ. We used to deal with them and still do on a limited basis, but we too have started getting flak from readers about the shitty service and shitty products put out by OCZ.

So should I forget about the Gladiator HSF and spend the extra money on the Swiftech? It's double the price, but I don't need the hassle of dealing with shady characters.

I gotta admit- the Swifttech scares me- that thing is huge (uses 4 mounting posts...POSTS I say!).

But I don't want to embarass myself (or the LWD SETI Team) if I post the OCZ HSF in my sig over at [H]OCP. I sure don't need any more flames. :)

I think I used too many acronymns, my head hurts......Very Happy

If you are looking for alternatives i have had nothing but good service from plycon.com. The prices are reasonable too.
I have bought from them several times.

The Delta is loud, as I said. Not as annoying as the 60mm Delta IMO though. It's not so much a whine, as it is a roar. Makes for better white noise as I sleep. You could always just buy the heatsink and use a quieter fan. They did just that at http://www.Overclockers.com and found only a slight rise in temps.

I don't mean to sound biased or anything, but from personal experience I can safely say that OCZ SUCKS!! (I've posted a little while back on my experience with them.)

If you buy a product from them and there's a problem, well, it's your problem. OCZ customer service is so bad that you'd have better luck writing to Dear Abby.

As far as their Gladiator HSF goes, take a close look at the pictures: The fan is mounted on the HS with wood screwes forced between the thin plates, bending them. Swiftech, on the other hand, mounts the fan directly to a base plate tapped for machine screwes. Imagine a high RPM fan working its way loose from a OCZ HS and bouncing around inside your case!

See I told you we get flak about OCZ...thanks Ed, we don't endorse very many companies, but the ones we do like we like because of our experiences and not how much stuff they send us for free.

I am pretty fond of my Alpha PAL6035. It is pretty expensive, but with a nice and quiet 26cfm 60mm sunon fan on it, my T-Bird 1.2 rarely gets over 45C. With the loud Delta 38cfm 60mm, it never gets over about 40C. That is with a 92mm intake fan, an 80mm output fan, and the psu fan. Not that the fans really matter, my case is almost perpetually without sidepanels.
