OK, it installed, boot loader works fine, I can switch back and forth between Linux and Win95 no problem. And KDE is fun to play with. Two problems.
1 - it seemed to miss my sound card (SB16) entirely;
2 - I can't get into the settings so that I can tell it how to find my ADSL connection. The KDE Control Center is no help, and I can't seem to figure out how to run the regular Control Center.

1. should work(if it is pci at least, isa gives me goosebumps) the program sndconfig should help, run as root from commandline

2.run MCC as root. Choose the network part and in that adsl. Should work reasonable.

Hey, gang, I got the ADSL connection to work... basically what I had to do was reinstall Linux from scratch, then plug in some numbers my provider gave me for their DNS server. So now I'm typing this in Konqueror in KDE. [8D]

However, it still isn't able to find my sound card. Not even in HardDrake -- under Sound Cards, there's nothing there. Under Other Devices there's a device listed, but running SoundDrake on it, nothing happens... It's a Creative Labs SB16... they're all over the place...

(And I'm starting to think that now I have it installed, I should be moving this to another forum...) Question

Mandrake doesn't have an draksound program. If the Soundcard isn't set during installation you can run sndconfig from the command-line. I don't know if it is installed but urpmf sndconfig will show which rpm you have to install to get it.

Is it an isa or a pci card?

sndconfig worked! I have Internet, I have sound... and I start moving away from Windows.

Thanks again to Rover; his Install Guide was extremely useful! [Very Happy]

LWD team,
Thanks for your excellent articles, and informative reviews.

Forum members,
Thansk for your inout, and ideas. I am panning to install Mandrake 8.0 on my existing windows 2000 computer. I have been arming myself with as much information about this as I can before I start formatting and partitioning my HDD's.

If I could take a moment to explain my situation, and concerns. The first thin I have noticed is that many people opt to continue to run Windows, but then use VMware to run Linux. I think is going to be the avenue I take, but if need be, can you boot to Linux normally (not VMware) with the Linux boot disk ?

Can you perform the installation from VMware, or do I need to do it before I boot into windows 2000.

Second, I hae read your article on dual booting windows 200 with Linux. That article refers to Mandrake 7.1, is 8.0 similiar enough that I could still follow those directions ?

Also has there been any development for mandrake to recognise nd use NTFS 5 partitions ?

Thanks,

VMware is a program. You need to have Windows running before you can load VMware. If you want to boot straight to Linux then you need to investigate dual-booting.

- Ok -
its installed, I went throught the steps as described, however I received errors when trying to set up the graphics card and monitor during setup.

I figure it is becuase I need to wait for the host OS to be running, then install the VMware tools for linux. however when Linux reboots, I login from the prompt. it goes to the command prompt. How do I get intot he GUI for Mandrake ?

I must be really stupid not to figure it out, I tired, when I type help, it scroll son my so I can only see the bootom portion of the help file, and pressing page-up doesn't move me through the previosu part of the file.

If you think I'm too stupid to run Linux then be brave and say so (i dont want to waste my time either), otherwise if you think you can help, and that I should continue to try to facilitate Linux into my computing experience please offer any assistance you may.

Also what is a good book to buy on the subject ? I dont have the cash to buy dozens of manuals, I am hoping for one that will at least help me use Linux effectivly.
