how do you change monitors w/redhat 6.2 linux?

I installed RH 6.2 on an HP netserver e60 while using a panasonic pm15 monitor and it worked ok. I swapped the panasonic for a compaq presario monitor and the machine (which is set to boot into the gui) dislpays something that looks like the sign in screen but it is rolling horizontally pretty fast and showing vertical lines that are waving also. I imagine I could boot ok with a start disk but do you have any idea what I need to change to make the compaq monitor work? thanks, j.r.

boot into a shell, go into xsetup, and lower your resolution, then try going into X... worked for me..
