Anyone know where that "This computer is in use and has been locked." screen is. It would be nice to change the text on that one for the work machine.
thanks.

For those of you having problems with Photoshop 6, make sure you select to include the explicit colors Black and White. Then, when you save the BMP, the option for 4 bit will become available in addition to 8 bit (otherwise only 8 bit is available). Now save your image in 4 bit and it should be the proper size.

Here's a little anime image I did for my machine Lain:
Man, it took me a while to figure out that the scrolling bit isn't just color cycling. Very cool to use.

Subz,
I had the same trouble with SP1. I got the same error, and via some scientific study (that is, Trial and Error). Thanks to wesley96, and his post on page 3, for the pointer that there was another file to replace in here.
Anyway, a few people may have trouble with this, so here is what I did:
<Standard Disclaimer: I accept no responsibilty if your system screws up. This worked for me, and it should work for everyone. But if it does go wrong, I didn't do. You did. Therefore it is YOUR fault[ ]. Oh, and please take note of Step 0. It is the most important!>
Step 0) BACKUP THE NTOSKRNL.EXE AND SP1.CAB FILES! If something goes wrong, you'll need them.
Then follow the instructions up to step 9. This will give you what I called the "edited NTOSKRNL.EXE".
Step 10) Extract the file from C:\WINNT\Driver Cache\i386\sp1.cab to a temp directory. I used WinZip to extract the files.
Step 11) Replace the ntoskrnl.exe file in the temp directory with the "edited ntoskrnl.exe".
Step 12) Use a compression program to repack the files in the temp directory into a new sp1.cab file. I used CabMan2001, downloaded from Tucows (look under Compression Utilities). Copy this over the original file.
Step 13) Copy the "edited ntoskrnl.exe" over the top of the ntoskrnl.exe files located in the C:\WinNT\System32 and C:\WinNT\System32\DllCache directories (Thanks go to JonaZ <page 1>).
Step 14) Reboot, and show your workmates (Yes, I did it to a work machine first. Has to be some perk with working in the IT section[ ]).
If anyone can find any problems with these instructions, or if anyone wants help with them, feel free to e-mail me (IAmMarauder@aol.com). I may not reply for two or three days from now (I going away), but I will respond as soon as I return.
Cheers!
P.S. Thanks also to Spot for the original article! Keep up the good work.
P.P.S. spudsdude: have a look in the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\MSGINA.DLL file. It is there under Dialog\1900\1033. Haven't hacked this (yet), so keep us posted on how it went. Also check out C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\WINLOGON.EXE as well. At this rate, we can completely customise Win2K!!! (My suggestion is to replace "This computer is in use and has been locked." with "I'm busy. Piss off and leave me ALONE!". Should raise some eyebrows).
P.P.P.S. Sorry about the long post, but I hope it helps. |

As said by IAmMarauder, check the dialogs in MSGINA.DLL. You can view / edit the dialogs with Resource Hacker. If it's not inside that file check inside NTOSKRNL or WINLOGON.

Do not replace the 1st bitmap but use one of the others.
No. 4 worked fine for me (I uess it's OS-type dependant).

Sorry for the delay, but had a Microsoft Exam... 880 points
Ok, let's clear almost all doubts.
The first time I tried this I had SP1 installed. I didn't enabled WFP(SFC) after changing the logo. As soon as I enabled it guess what...
I saw Wesley96(thanx for the mail) post and tried it... no luck. One of Wesley steps is to copy the screwd up file to WINNT\Driver Cache. On my system that didn't work. It's WINNT\Driver Cache\i386
WFP(SFC) is enabled in my system now. No need to disable it!
I used the Search option to monitor in realtime WFP at work. Ok, you just have to update the file in 2 dirs: WINNT\Driver Cache\i386 and WINNT\System32 in this order
On my system there was no need to update it at WINNT\System32\dllcache but if anyone should bump into trouble, update it there also.
For those of you who are having trouble with the pics... :
I'm using the Porsche pic from Arkos Reed(my thanx to you) and just had to save it to disk, open Paint, that advanced and most recent program from Microsoft and save the file to 16 color BMP.
I read IAmMarauder post and had no need to do all that work, but I want to congratulate you for your post. That means you cared!
I first tested my changes in SP1 and then I installed SP2 and did it all over again:NO PROBLEMS IN SP2!
Let's make it short:
file = NTOSKRNL.EXE
1: Backup the file!
2: Make copy of the file to edit to another dir
3: Edit the file in the other dir
4: Copy the edited file to WINNT\Driver Cache\i386
4.5 Copy the edited file to WINNT\System32\dllcache (OPTIONAL)
5: Copy the edited file to WINNT\System32
6: Restart the system and be amazed [ ]
For those of you who can't change it in the Server, look at the 4 and 12 bitmaps, their the server pics(their the same but with the copyright at 1999 in pic 4 and 2000 in pic 12)
I'll try tomorrow beautifying a W2K Advanced Server and hope to tell you all went well
Hope I helped someone,
Joao Barros
