Oh, really?

How about the instruction, repeated many, many, many times by myself and others, that the bitmap should not be compressed and that the final image file size should be 153,718 bytes? Did you find that?

That was the problem. You'll find that if your final bitmap is 153,718 bytes in size, without any compression, then you should see the picture properly when you boot your PC. It does mean that your modified kernel is slightly larger than the original, but this won't cause any problems.

Be aware of any service packs and hotfixes you may have applied. Every time you install a patch which replaces NTOSKRNL.EXE then you'll need to repeat the process. Not every patch will replace NTOSKRNL.EXE, but some do.

Then they're wrong.

The bitmaps need to be 640x480 pixels, 16 colours (4 bits), with no compression. Try it with MS Paint: create a blank bitmap of 640x480 and save it, choosing "16 Color Bitmap" as the file type. You'll get a warning about loss of color information; ignore it. The resulting file will be the right spec. Alternately, open an image in IrfanView, resize it to 640x480 and decrease the colour depth to 16 colours (4BPP). Then save it as a Bitmap. The end result will be the same.

Try using IrfanView to decrease the colour depth, then:

The above linked image is a bitmap, with the right colour depth and dimensions, and works out to 153,718 bytes exactly.

The size in bytes will be in parentheses after the rounded-off size:

I hate to ask, but since I haven't seen anything regarding XP, can I assume this doesn't work with XP?

Or is there some way it can?

There's an easier way to do it with Win XP.

Save your 640x480x16 bitmap to C:\Windows (or C:\WINNT, wherever Windows is installed) as Boot.bmp

Then edit your BOOT.INI, adding the following parameters to the Operating Systems line: /bootlogo /noguiboot

For example, here's a Boot.ini with this enabled:

Code: Select all
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /bootlogo /noguiboot

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

That is the orginal boot.ini file. There is a program called 'Tune Up Utilities 2006' that allows the same thing that I just discovered. I had a older version (2004) and I don't think it had that option. This is what it is now;
Quote:
[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /sos /TUTag=PQPB1K /Kernel=TUKernel.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional (TuneUp Backup)" /fastdetect /sos /TUTag=PQPB1K-BAK
Any idea what this "TUTag=PQPB1K" is?

Anyway, there is also a registry mod (I think it was the registry) that gets rid of the splash screen altogether, but subsitutes a worse looking blue screen durning the boot process that allows you to see the device loading sequence (not that you could read it scrolling that fast). Neither screen is in the 'kernel' file as it is with 2k.

I can't find what/where the mod is, do you know what I'm referring to?
