When burning to a CD, is it better to have that working by itself or it doesn't matter if you're doing other stuff while it's burning? Would the data flow be messed up because there are other processes running at the same time? |

It's not so much a question of other programs running but of drive access. If you are burning a CD and the CD-R software calls for some data because the buffer is low and another proggie is access the drive puttting the CD-R software on hold the buffer could run "dry" and you might get a buffer under run error or something. Of course if you have a huge buffer on the CD-R to begin with then this might not cause a single problem. Especially if you have a fast controller and a fast HD. The Plextor 12/10/32 with it's burn proof technology has been pushed to it's limit at my place of work and has yet to fail so it all kind of depends on your CD-R drive. But to be safe I'd say close all other apps down before starting the burn just to be safe, unless you have the blanks to test it and see how it performs under stress[} ]

if you're that worried about buffer under-runs, you should consider buying a SCSI cd-rw, and a cheap SCSI 2 hard disk, and an adaptec 2940 based SCSI card
when you are ready to burn from image, move the image over to the SCSI HD, and start your program.
that way you will never have to worry about drive slowdowns, or disk access problems because the data will never have to be "farmed off" of the SCSI controller

I have a Mitsumi 4804T 4x4x24 CD-RW with a 2MB buffer. I once forgot to turn off SETI, and was downloading mandrake to the hard drive, and it still worked!! Mandrake took a while to download, so I forgot it was even doing it, and then SETI is just usually on.

Rover,
would you recommend that Plextor 12/10/32 to someone(me) shopping for a burner?

DON'T BUY A PHILIPS!!!!I have the 460RW and it sucks. It runs off of cpu power instead of the RAM so no DMA for me.[(!]It burnt out the day before the warranty was up do I called in and they were gonna send me a new one. This was in 9/00, well it's 2/01 and still nothiing that works!!
I have 2 junk ones they've sent me since september. They are in worse condition then the one I sent back. I've called at least 40 times (no joking) and have seen a couple VERY NASTSY emails! They are one if not THE worst company around for support!
I guess my point is DON'T BUY PHILIPS!! You'll be in the same boat as me, and it's no fun![^]

I have a plextor 12/10/32A and love it. With the burn proof technology I've never made a coaster yet. Plextor also has a 16/10/40A coming out for about $270 USD.
BTW these are both EIDE drives.
I AM NOT PARANOID!
