hello,

just installed win95 over top of win3.1, but when it trys to reboot I only receive a black screen and a blinking cursor in upper left portion of the screen (ie...cannot reboot)

win3.1 was in c:\windows
win95 I placed in c:\windows.000

what happened here do you think?

I cannot get to a dos prompt to even change/delete anything? (I do not have a dos boot disk either or a win95 startup disk)

there must be a way...

many many thanks

i'm guessing that you did not "upgrade"... so when the install program went to create the directory c:\windows... it saw that it already existed and made the ".000" directory.

I had a problem like this once before... changing the directory names only makes things worse... (i was young and nieve... BACK OFF.... "a registry... what's that?")

I would suggest removing the win95 install... while in 3.1, try to install... your disk may have an upgrade option.

-- oops... i must've missed the part about the prompt.... ummm... find access to someone elses pc and "make a startup disk"... or, shove the win95 disk in the drive... it might have a boot sequence on there.

hmmm... you're obviously on a PC now... (maybe a mac...) if on a PC... get a floppy right now and make a start-up disk.

or do what i do when nothing is making sense. turn her off... pat the monitor and rub the side of her case. Go to sleep. wake-up in the morning.... pat her once more.. kiss the monitor... and it'll start like a charm... don't belive me???? Try it... it's worked in the past!!!!

I don't think he did on purpose. If i remember correctly... attempting a dual boot or full install over 3.1 with 95 caused this problem. The setup program automatically created "windows.000" if "windows" already existed.

or maybe it renames the 3.1 directory as opposed to install into it.

A boot disk would do wonders right now...

I agree, or rename the win.ini file so it'll let you copy over that directory

I think it does create a windows.000 when you run the full install while in Win 3.1. I had this happen to me once (can't rememeber what I did). You will probably have to remove the Win 95 install. I always hate running the upgrade to 95 I would suggest doing a full install. Get the PC to boot up to dos and run it from there. Also do you need to keep 3.1 on it? Are there old programs that you want or are you updating those too.
