What is the fastest slot 1 processor that the 440BX chipsets will support? I'm currently running a P2 400 in it but would like to upgrade my proc. Which brings me to my new post. What ever the fastest processor supported is....Does anyone have one there looking to get rid of?

That P3-550 would work fine.

Depending on your particular motherboard, you may be able to run a slocket and use a socket-370 chip.

However...
It really is not worth the effort.
$150 will buy you a modern CPU and motherboard. With a new AthlonXP 1800+ going for less than $90 and a Socket A motherboard for less than $60 (e.g.: ECS K7S5A--works with your existing PC-100 or with DDR), it's just not worth it to spend money on the old BX. A Duron solution would be less than $100 for motherboard plus CPU.

depends on who made your motherboard and whether or not they have a bios upgrade available for it.
I would venture to say the highest speed CPU would be 1.10GHz 100MHz fsb. Since officially the 440bx chipset only supports up to 100fsb and 1.10ghz is the highest speed fcpga (non-tualitin) P3.

I know that I could piece together a new system pretty cheap, that just isn't the point. This is my 6 year old's system and I've been using it as a trainer to teach him how to put PC's together. I don't want to spend any money on a new system no matter how cheap the cost. I figured if I could pick up a 700Mhz proc for 45-50 bucks or maybe in trade for some other stuff I have lying around than it would be worth the effort to do so. The processor is the only thing he hasn't upgraded yet and I think it would be easier for him to handle the sturdy slot 1 proc's more so than a fragile t-bird or duron.

The highest FSB I could go with my Abit BH6 (440BX) was 133mhz. :-D

You can find some slot 1 processors here.
