Quick question for the gallery:
Recently I picked up my second Athlon XP 1600 and this one has the green material instead of the brown. (I know there's a proper name for the stuff surrounding the actual core, but its escaping me now.)
Anyway, I have heard and seen roughly zero regarding the new core packaging. Are the cores with the green packaging more overclockable (IE: is it even worth my time to try and unlock it), or did AMD make things more complicated with this iteration of chip packaging?
Just fishing for any reports/info that can be found on these guys. |

I got a 1900+ right after the 2000+ models were realeased, and mine was green, too. From what I have heard, the new chips are indeed more overclockable than the old; I personally just use multiplier OCing, so I can't really post any outrageous numbers.
In other words, it's worth it.

these are the chips made and assembled for AMD by Intel's plant over in Malaysia. They have to use those old P3 carriers for something now that they've gone 478 on us...
Actually, I've seen them around, no different from the other brown organic carriers, the OC'ability is more urbane to the stepping and week...

I agree iceman. I read over at the pond that green was chosen due to supplier / marketing.
The color of the substrate really has no effect what so ever. It is just dye after all.
Mine's green but I think that all XP's made after Jan, 2002 are green..

I thought Green were the OEM retail chips, and brown are the unboxed chips with no heatsink and fan.
I see that PLD seems to be more accurate.

I think AMD's logic was 'replace the grey, easily cracked substrate with the brown, more flexible organic stuff'. Then a little while later someone noticed that brown substrate looks, quite literally, like turd so they died it green.
Also helps win over the 'Intel till I die' crowd as there's less to distinguish between the procs! |

The grey ones were made of ceramic material, and the brown ones are organic (what is it? Brain? Heart? Which organ we talking about? Oh wait brown? Ew, I don't want to know anymore)
The organic pieces are cheaper to manufacture, plus they're easier to handle so those are the reasons for the change from ceramic to organic. Most people already said this, I'm just reiterating. Dunno why.
As far as overclocking goes, we can't leave out the fact that newer Athlon chips produce less heat than older Athlons, and this factor attributes to their overclockability.

Finally got this image to display my SETI stats. Took me bloody long enough. Thanks for the help guys! LWD rulez!
