Why overclock? Yes, back in the 486/586 days you could make significant gains by tuning up your machine. I've even speeded up machines by shortening the ribbon cable to the harddrive. But that was then. Now, our machines are so fast that I can't see any gain by all these tricks. So why do it?
It doesn't even have to be a good idea. |

Because it can. [ ]
Seriously though, sometimes its to stectch your budget a little bit. However, it is like anything, there's a tradeoff. While I could use a far crummier heatsink/fan combo that would cost less, I wouldn't get as much overclocking performance. So while I saved money buying an Athlon XP-1600, I spent the saved money on high performance air cooling.
Also bear in mind that you also have insane gamers (waves hand wildly) who want to get the best fps out of thier system as they try to vanquish those who oppose them.
The other group is those who like to experiment. I can waver in this category, for me overclocking is a means to an end.
Not to mention the ooh-ahh factor is big in this crowd. Every once in a while PC freaks like to whip out their proverbial wankers and see who is the biggest. Yes the analogy is crude, but I have observed this behavior first hand and (regrettably) done it too. [XX(] |

There is a newer method with today's more powerful machines: Run more than one instance of the command line client.

...and all you have to do is whip out enough to win the contest, right? |

It gives me a computer that performs like a more expensive computer. My P4-1.6A cost me 235CDN(For the CPU). I immediatly overclocked it to 2240MHz, using the stock heatsink. For a P4-2.2 I would have had to spend $459CDN. |

really, because one can. You are correct that little performance is gained by OC'ing a big chip to begin with. It's a percentage thing.
But hey, it's fun as long as I don't fry it..
