I'm looking into replacing my duron 600 with an Athlon 1600 XP
of course I'll want to swap out my Fop32 with a new HSF, and I'm looking at the GLOBALWIN TAK68 dual fan HSF
if anyone has any experience with that HSF could you give me an idea of performance/noise/ and any issues you may have had with it (I especially like the thumbscrew to tighten down the HSF) |

I've never seen one, and unfortunately Dan has not reviewed it yet.
Here is a review with some very deceptive and poorly-designed charts:

Here are more reviews:

Here is a video review:
http://www.3dgameman.com/vr/globalwin/tak68_cooler/video_review.htm
It may be a bad sign when the company's homepage starts with a flash animation of a stylized heatsink vibrating and exploding into pieces.

I've heard it's an okay cooler. Well, all right, it's a good cooler, but the cooling doesn't justify the noise (read: 2x fans != 2x cooling). I know I'm always pushing it, but I've gotta recomment the Thermalright AX-7 with a 33-40 CFM fan. Best balance of price/noise/performance I've found so far.

I'm goin with hrbrib on this one. Get Vantec. I love the CCK-6027D. Even when I was overclocking my 1.4 T-Bird to nearly 1.6GHz @ 1.85V, the hottest it ever got was 51*C with crappy thermal paste. It's kinda loud, but not the dreaded Delta jet engine kinda loud. Plus, the retention clip isn't a pain in the ass to deal with, like the FOP-32.

I just installed a ThermalTake Volcano7 on my second system (I gave away my trusty old Alpha PAL-6035). It did pretty well in Dan's testing and it cost only $19 from Newegg, including thermally-controlled 80x25mm fan.
It does not quite perform up to the level of the Alpha PAL-8045 in my other PC, but it is as quiet as the Alpha and it was cheaper and easier to install.

Just one problem with that: IT'S VERY LARGE. It won't fit some mobo's.

The Volcano7 is 70x70mm. AMD's specification allows for a 60x80mm heatsink. The V7 is still smaller than the massive 80x80mm Alpha PAL-8045 on my other system. I had to rotate the Volcano7 slightly to dodge a capacitor on the A7M266 while connecting the first side of the clip, but after that I was able to straighten it out and hook the other side of the clip without hitting anything. Cooling performance is adequate (not outstanding) but the Volcano7 is quiet, cheap and easy to use.

im curious what type of heat sink to put in my new comp.....its gonna have an abit kr7a board......and an xp 2000+ processor.......i have never installed a heat sink with clips before......my current system's heatsink has those little thumbclips that makes it immpossible to crush the core on the processor, unforuntantly this heatsink wont be up to par on the xp 2000+ i dont believe.......so im wondering what heatsink you would reccomend that has a similar design to this......(it is a antec jetcool heatsink)....i was also wondering of one of those "through-the-motherboard-heatsinks" would work in this application......

Yes it would. However, you're gonna have to cough up quite a few bucks to do so. Swiftech and Alpha are the only companies I'm aware of (I could be wrong) that make ones with the 4-hole mounting.
Do you know who makes your heat sink?

According to Alpha, the PAL-8045 will fit on your chosen motherboard.
The PAL-8045 is $35 at Newegg. Add $4 to $12 for a good 80mm fan.

hmm.....i like what i see.......im just not very keen on trying to clip the heatsink onto the 200 processor by pressing down very hard with a screwdriver.....which is why im looking at thumbclips and the motherboard hole ones......and also water cooling

I refer back to my previous staement. Most of the Vantec's use thumb clips.
