Ok, this one has me totally perplexed.
My laptop is win98. I can't access any network shares with it. So if I type in \\anyname, I get an error saying anyname is not logged on.
Silly thing is if i type in \\laptop-name, I can access 0pen shares on it with my desktop. I've uninstalled every network device and protocol, but to no avail.
any clue?

need more info:
what OS is your desktop,
what is the login name you use for your laptop,
what art the names of the shares on each one,
anything else you can share to give me a clue :

Laptop name: starsky
desktop name: putch
both are in the same workgroup
Laptop: win98 SE (no login)
Desktop: win2k pro, no service pack (login starsky)
Open shares on both machines: mp3s, movies
It doesn't matter what name i try to access with my laptop, ALL say that they are offline, but I can access them with my desktop.

the problem is that you don't have a login name on the laptop, so you're not joining the network "as somebody" if that's a reasonable excuse
you need to assign the laptop a login so that it has profile (so you can manage permissions)
you also need to create an account for that login name on your win2k desktop
is there anything I missed?
