Post Posted: Wed Sep 09, 2009 3:06 pm   Post subject: Can a router make a adsl modem reboot ? Reply with quote Back to top

I was wondering what is going on, I bought a small laptop and a Linksys WRT160N Wireless-N Ultra RangePlus router.
I had a wired D-Link before that went to a Lynx 220 Starbridge modem http://www.starbridge.net/products/adsl-gateways/lynx-l220.html .
The modem belongs to the ISP and is relatively new. When I first got it, it would reboot during long downloads and I noticed it got really hot. So I have it propped up so air can get to the under sides and that seems to have fixed it. The picture makes it look like it has a bunch of slots for cooling but it is solid plastic, the holes don't go all the way through.
When I took out the D-Link router and hooked up the Linksys my modem would reboot constantly and I would lose the connection between the router and the modem, I downloaded and installed new firmware but it didn't help so in frustration I took everything back including the laptop.
I hooked the D-Link back up and haven't had a single modem reboot since.
So I'm wanting to get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127215 but I'm not sure if I had a junk router from linksys or what.
Is it possible that it was the routers fault ?

suppose it could be possible.

More than once I've witnessed modems (cable and DSL) causing routers or firewalls to reboot.

I fail to see why the reverse could not be possible.

I've seen stranger things happen. For example... back when I had a room mate, we had AT&T Uverse and a wireless router... think it was a Dlink. Anyways, we were both World of Warcraft players.... and after one of the WoW patches something freaky happened... don't remember the details now.... but basically... if he did a certain thing in game it sent out some sort of malformed packet, and when that packet hit the AT&T modem it would reboot. Took us forever to figure that out... finally ran across some bug reports from other WoW players on their official forums that explained the whole thing, and they patched it shortly afterward. It was truly strange though.

It only happened when he was connected wirelessly too, he could plug in and play and do whatever he wanted.

Thanks, I guess there is only one thing to do and that's to go ahead and get the new router and see if I have any better luck with the D-Link version.
Here's hoping ! Smile

I now have have D-Link DIR-655 ( Thanks JustAnEngineer ) and it works great.
Reading the manual I downloaded it mentioned that it should be at least 3 feet from a 2.4 Ghz cordless phone and that even if you weren't using the phone at the time that it still sends out signals that could interfere with the router.
To bad the Linksys didn't mention that because I had the router 2 foot from the phone, it might have worked had I known and now the phone is about 8 feet away and all is good.
Just a little update if anyone cares. Rolling Eyes

Interesting point about RFI from other nearby devices in the same bandwidth range. Hadn't thought about that. Thanks for sharing Smile
