Hi!
My name is Rahhstah, and I have a problem.
One of my trusty hard drives, the important one with data, has decided it doesn't want to work anymore. The BIOS will find it and report it, then it reports an error and I have to [ESC] to continue boot. Not recognized when I stick it into the USB enclosure.
I tried the freezer...no workie.
Any other miracle ideas? I haven't been able to get my BartPE or UBCD's to work either
But maybe..one of you owns an electron microscope , or at least has some brilliance you'd like to share.

might try helix3
http://www.e-fense.com/helix/
click the download graphic on the right
I usually use this one for copying files from drives that will still spin before trying recovery software like spinrite/ontrack/etc just to get all the currently readable stuff off I can... if the partition info is still good. Nice thing about linux is it will bypass the bios and still detect the drives.
if it doesn't spin though... you'll have to use one of those huts that has a clean room that can open the drive and place the platters on a new motor... or do the crazy thing I did once and open the drive and manually spin the motor just to get it over the initial friction and then download everything off the drive as fast as possible while keeping a large fan pointed at it (I did put the lid back on and 4 corner screwed it to keep the dust off as best I could before pointing the fan at it)
of course that was a 510meg drive and didn't take long to off-load. It did crap out pretty quick after that though. |

Well, I tried Helix...and no avail. So I stuck in another problem drive that I had (already backedup) and it worked fine on it..
I'll just consider this one really toast. I'm not going to take it apart, but it's just not going to work out.
Nutz.
thanks for the Helix Live CD, that'll come in handy in the future! |
