Fri May 02, 2008 1:54 pm Post subject: Need Advice On A Sub-$100 Video Card (You There JAE) |
|
My friend put $110 in my bank acct to order him a video card. I paid $176.32 for this one, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161174 , in Oct last year and now it is $99.99. It has not quite lived up to my expectations--WoW sometimes lags down to 10-15 FPS--but he dosen't play WoW, so it could be a good card for him. This one, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150229 is the highest rated one in the $75-$100 range.
Which of these is better? Is there another I'm missing that is better still? It has to be under $110 total with shipping. |

I hate mail-in-rebates. You could just barely reach the excellent Radeon HD3850 (after mail-in-rebate) in this price range. GeForce 8800GS is slightly slower, but it also needs MIRs to reach the required price.
So, GeForce 8600GT may be the best way to go. It's slightly faster than your Radeon HD2600XT in most games. I'd suggest a card with 512MB of memory if you play at higher than 1680x1050 resolution.
$76 +7 S&H -25 MIR ECS GeForce 8600GT 512MB PCIe
Maybe BAM can find you a better deal on a GeForce 8600GTS, 8800GS, 9600GT, 8800GT or 8800GTS (in increasing performance order) or a Radeon HD3850 or HD3870. |

I talked him into waiting a couple weeks until he can buy this 8800GTS instead of this 8600GT.
How hard was it? Well... Have you heard about the salesman who was so good he sold a refrigerator to an Eskimo? Not only did I sell him that refrigerator, but also a deep freeze and an air conditioner with his furnace as a trade in.
I know either of these cards will be a big improvement over the nVidia 6150 Onboard Video What I am really curious to see is just how big an improvement both the 8600GT and the 8800GTS would make as a percentage increase over the nVidia 6150. Any info on that would be highly appreciated |

You should see a 500-1000% improvement in gaming performance compared to the on-board graphics. |

What about this card? Basically the same as the other 8800GTS you posted but an overclocked version, for 10 bucks less up front. |

Gigabyte deal didn't go thru. Just got this email...
On behalf of the Newbiiz staff, we apologize for an unfortunate system error that occurred on the evening of Tuesday (5/6/0 . The pricing for the GIGABYTE ATI Radeon HD3850 (Item # GA-385_512) was mistakenly set at $82.
At this time, your order will be cancelled without any changes made to your credit card. We know you expect the best from us, and incidence like this should never hap...
blah blah blah

I don't know how online Vendors can get away with that crap. If they list it wrong and you order it, they should have to honor that price. You know a Brick and Mortar store would never get away with doing that. |
