How do you cook yer bacon?

Personally...I've changed over to oven fried.

I don't even preheat the oven. I just put the bacon slices on a jelly roll pan (it won't warp and spill grease out in the oven) and put them in the oven. Turn the heat up to 400°F and let the oven do the cooking. About 20 min fer thin sliced bacon and 25 min fer thick sliced bacon. Big SmileWink SmileTongue Smile

I voted pan fried. Then use the pan to cook other things like burgers. MMM bacon grease.

Oh yeah, and this:

Damnit, now you've gotten me hungry for bacon. Oh well. Hey, just the other day my daughter was "suggesting" that I make bacon and eggs for lunch one of these days. Maybe I'll do that on Saturday or Sunday, and try cooking the bacon this way to see how it works.

Oh and as to the poll at hand, I've always pan-fried my bacon (and then used the grease for whatever I'm cooking next, like the eggs), but I'm really intriqued by this oven-baked idea.

Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato. With Mayonnaise, on toasted (or not) white bread. Use a nice fresh vine-ripened tomato and don't overcook the bacon.

Oh...I used to be a pan-fried bacon type as well. I even had my own bacon press so my bacon would be nice and flat, too! Tongue Smile

But after looking up various ways of cooking bacon better (even looked at the numerous ways of nuking bacon) I needed a sure fire way consistantly when I travel on the road. The oven method was the only one that I could depend on without a lot of tending to the bacon. I even looked at my charcoal grill but that wouldn't give me the results I needed.

The oven method is sooo simple. I even tried it with some brown sugar on top. That was quite tasty! Big SmileWink SmileTongue Smile

I guess I need to incorporate the 180° turn and see how it turns out... Wink SmileBig Smile

Heh, I mentioned to the wife that I'd cook bacon and eggs for lunch on sunday, and that I had a "new way" to cook bacon. Immediately she was apprehensive, asking how it tasted and what-not.

But when I told her that it was highly recommended and that it was a *LOT* less messy, she was fully on-board...

She hates it when I make bacon because of the grease splatters. Never mind that I'm always sure to clean up after I'm done - it bugs thes sh*t out of her to see the grease on "her" stove even while I'm in the midst of cooking the bacon. Smile

As with any "new" method...you should try it with a few slices or with a pan full before Sunday so you know how long you want to cook yer bacon fer the right crispiness...as all bacon will cook differently as well as yer environment and oven/stove. If you have cast iron or an all metal pan (no plastic handles or non-stick surface) you could use that instead of a jelly roll pan. You just won't git as much bacon. I'd still line it with foil and definitely give it a try before you have to "perform" yer magic... Wink Smile

If you don't have an oven with a window, yer times might vary from you peeking inside to see if the bacon is done. The times are approximate. I tested various methods and I started out with a 6lb pack of thick sliced bacon. I can easily say that putting the bacon on a rack so it was out of the pan was not a good idea. Lining the pan with foil was a superb idea! Big Smile

The grease is still usable fer other things if you want to still use it. It just won't have all the burnt bits in it that yer used to... Big SmileWink Smile

If you want to make another batch...just empty the grease and reuse the foil...even if it is a little cruddy. You might have to decrease the time just a little to compensate fer the warmer pan. Wink SmileBig Smile

Piccies are the best I can do at the moment... Wink SmileBig Smile

Okay...just made a pan of oven fried bacon and took some piccies.

Empty jelly roll pan lined with aluminum foil...

Some "thick" sliced bacon...yeah, right...

10 slices of bacon ready to go into the oven...

Set yer oven to 400°F and put the rack in the middle of the oven...

Put the pan in the oven...

After 10 minutes...turn the pan 180°...

After another 10 minutes...the bacon is done!

Empty the grease into a heat safe jar (spagetti jar) or can...

Ten slices of oven fried goodness!

I pulled the foil out of the pan and threw that away. I only had to wash the jelly roll pan. I put the bacon on the cooling rack only fer display purposes. Normally I would just chow down on what I can eat and put the rest in a ziploc bag and store them in the freezer. Nuke fer about 30 seconds to bring it back to a nice crispy texture.
