Post Posted: Fri Apr 18, 2008 5:50 pm   Post subject: Cleaning up existing Win XP boot partition Reply with quote Back to top

Okay, I've run into a strange situation - for some reason (that being that it's Windows, after all), my XP boot partition has filled up.

Any suggestions on how I can clean up as much non-needed data as possible?

I already did the "disk cleanup" and did all it suggested (including deleting temp files and what-not). I also deleted other temp files I found (under Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\temp

But I'd like to clean up even more. Does anyone have suggestions on things I can safely delete from my C: drive that will reclaim some space?

In a nutshell, my C: drive is a 12GB partition that usually has about 3-4 GB free. At it's worst (tonight) it was down to 200MB free. I've reclaimed enough to get up to 1.25GB, but I still think I can do better.

Any ideas/suggestions?

http://www.ccleaner.com/

Good at cleanning out crap that isn't needed and giving the registry a clean up as well.

Change the amount that's set aside for your recycle bin. I think XP defaults to 10% of each partition, so set it down to 2-3% should save you a good chunk.

Remove all but the most recent restore point, if it is enabled.
Or, throw caution to the wind, and disable system restore.

Given that nobody I know, nor anyone in these forums, nor anyone I've read on teh internets has actually used the system restore to successfully restore a system from damn near anything, I'd say disable that vector anytime you're ready to.

It saves a hella lotta disk space too.

Odd as it may seem, I've actually used system restore a few times and found it to be quite helpful.

I've used System Restore a few times to fix some quirky problems on computers here in the office. And used to use it as a last resort for customers that couldn't access the internet when I worked for Cox Cable. Worked about 50% of the time.

That being said, on my personal computers, I always disable it.

You can delete all the $ntuninstall files if you don't care about uninstalling Windows Updates and hotfixes.
