And yes, my little 4 banger takes 6 quarts of oil.

Wow. My 6.0L V8 takes six quarts of oil. Both of my 4-bangers are a bit less than 4 quarts.

Mazda's have fairly high oil capacity compared to other cars on the road. Alphis 3.4L v6 alero takes 4.5 quarts. My old 2005 Mazda 3 2.3L I4 took 4.5 quarts, and now my 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 2.3L Turbo takes 6 quarts.

What's with the whole "3 months" thing anyway? Does oil really break down that much in 3 months that you would need to change it regardless of your mileage?

3 months puts you close to 3k usually, but if your doing alot of short trips probably not as much. so the idea was if you drive in a way that is harder on the car, you change your oil sooner.

threee months of just sitting won't be an issue though.

I had a car once that took one quart of oil per day, or 90 quarts every 3 months Approve Smile

I tend to agree that every 3000 (or 12 months, whichever comes first) you should start thinking about changing the oil. I'm pretty sure the mileage counter gizmo in my BMW was set up to calculate the distance left based on driving style, since it would display the # of miles left for a few seconds when the ignition was switched on, and it did not 'count down' in accordance to the actual miles it had been driven. I had it for 4 years and the oil interval never came on within a year of the last change, so I only wound up changing the oil at yearly intervals. Changing the oil prematurely did not reset the oil-change interval, so there isn't any sort of gizmo that 'looks' at the oil to see how dirty it is. FYI the 3.0 straight-6 held 7 quarts.

All my other cars and trucks are too old to have them new fangled oil change thingamajiggies.
