If, like me, you're tired of having to actually visit the forums in order to search them and, like me, you wish there was a "search forums" widget on every single page instead of always being one whole click away from the search form, then I've got just the thing for you!!!

If you go to this page here: http://www.matbooth.co.uk/lwd/

Then the little search widget in the top right hand corner of your browser will become highlighted. By clicking the dropdown and choosing to add LittleBlackDog as a search option, you can search the forums without having to visit the search page, you don't even have to on the site at all, like so:

Isn't that great? Aren't you so happy now you can finally lead a happy, search-filled existence whilst saving yourself one, maybe two mouse clicks a day? I know I am!

Note to the friendly admin staff:

Where is FT these days?

If it works and you like this, consider adding the following snippet to the forum template so that visitors can add it to their browser without having to know about (and visit) this thread and my website:

Code: Select all
<head>
<link rel="search" type="application/opensearchdescription+xml" href="/lbd_opensearch.xml" title="LittleBlackDog" />
</head>

You will also need to add the lbd_opensearch.xml file (right-click, save-as) to the site's document root too.

This should work in all browser that support the OpenSearch, which includes Firefox 2 & 3 and Internet Explorer 7.

I know it doesn't seem to be taking any notice of any search options passed in the query line, so I'll try and fix that if requested but it may exclude Internet Explorer 7 users since I've read that it doesn't support OpenSearch post requests, only get requests (another Microsoft half job, woohoo). Needs more testing, essentially, but it works as a proof of concept for my own edification if nothing else.

Enjoy!
