I think the idea behind this rebate is for people to spend it. Putting it into a savings account, paying down debt or some other responsible purpose nullifies the impact on our economy that this is supposed to have. You are supposed to spend it irresponsibly on goods or services. So go be good little consumer and plonk it down on a new HDTV, computer, video game, camera, materials for home improvement etc. How about some chrome wheels for your ride, a new roof for your house or maybe some plane tickets to East Freepingham to visit your inlaws? GW says that this will fix our economy and prevent terrorism, so by golly go out and buy that new Louis Vuitton handbag or that deluxe George Foreman Mean Lean Fat Grillin' Machine. But for god's sake don't blow it on your credit card bills, debt or (heaven forbid) your savings account!
I beg to differ - you have to bear in mind that if I decide to use my "rebate" to pay down debt, that money doesn't just vanish. It doesn't disappear from the system (unless your idea of "savings" is putting it under your mattress at home). The money goes to someone else. If you're paying down your debt to someone (or a company), then that's more money that someone (or company) can then turn around and spend on something else.
Same goes for putting it into a bank savings - the more money put into savings, the more available for the bank to (ultimately) loan our to people, to put back into the economy.

And once you pay off this debt, you won't ever borrow on a casual basis anymore? hmm? That's like waking up with a hangover and swearing you will never drink again.
I have and i haven't. I never want to go through that again.
I'm using mine to pay off some credit cards so I can finally take the income from my job & save it or invest it. Instead of paying interest on the money I spend, which can end up being double the original price. If I do need to use a credit card for an emergency, I have it. But paying down that debt is more important that saving right now. Because I'll end up spending in the end.
No one can tell me what being "patriotic" is. Thats so hypocritical. I have the freedom not to spend it. I've already spent it. The credit card company CEO's can take that petty cash & pump it into the economy.

Not a single one.
They use that money to mail out new credit offers, with low introductory APRs.
