|
The other day I found a seemingly good deal on a used computer on craigslist (well 80% of a computer... no video card). I checked out the listed parts on Newegg, and decided to go for it. Seeing as the guy couldn't find a spare video card at the time, he dropped another $50 on the price and I picked it up untested... but it looked fine.
On closer inspection I found the heatsink improperly installed. Its a Asus Silent Knight, looks pretty nice, but half-assed install. The clip is only hanging on by 3 of the 4 hooks and thermal grease was buttered everywhere... Upon downloading the manual, it looks like the guy had used the Intel screws (its an AMD AM2 CPU) and didn't use the spacers on the screws for the bracket. So the bracket will tighten down until it sits on the CPU, and at that point its too tight to put the clip on.
I've weighed my options, I doubt the guy would have the right parts as he would have assembled it correctly in the first place. Emailed Asus and waiting a reply, but doubting that will get me too much. Mainly I was wondering if anyone had the same heatsink and would mind measuring the spacers so I could fabricate or assemble something from the hardware store. I also thing the screws are too short, but not sure.. Looking for any help here.. thanks guys |
