Post Posted: Sun Feb 03, 2008 4:29 am   Post subject: Tooth filling and root canals (endodontic therapy)? Reply with quote Back to top

Tomorrow (~ next 12 hours) is my appointment for replacing an single and old filling with a new one, and I'd like you to share your experience.

I think endodontic therapy is done when the damage reaches the pulp.

I also think that the moment the damage reaches the pulp, the tooth pains all the time, no matter if you bite on it or not. (not sure though, just guessing)

My filling is close to the pulp for sure, and it pains when I bite on it. But since it doesn't pain without biting, I'm assuming the pulp is fine so far

I need your experience regarding this section. Is it enough evidence that having no pain while not biting on a tooth the pulp is not damaged?

Any extra advices/recommendations are welcome as well.

*cheers* (with broken teeth j/k Razz)

Don't have any advice or recommendations to give... but I do know that pain isn't always the best indicator. I haven't had any pain biting or chewing or anything, and I have serious problems with a good number of my teeth, to the point that I know I'll need at least one root canal, and at least one cap, along with several fillings. Last time I went to the dentist (right out of high school), I got a filling, and a few months later it fell out. I had moved and had no way of going back to the same place to get it worked on for free, and no money to have someone else do it, so I never got it fixed. That's 5+ years of a tooth with no filling. >.<

I'm planning on using my tax refund to get started on fixing them...it won't go far, but it'll get somewhere...

I don't have any answers to your questions, but can share my experience Smile
I had to have root canal done on a tooth that had lost a lot of surrounding bone support due to periodontal problems in that area. The doc gave me a shot of Novocaine or whatever it is they use, and then proceeded to tell me that i would probably feel most of the pain because there was so little there for the Novocaine to grab onto... Something like that.
I did. It wasn't fun.

I had a root canal done, and I didn't think it was much of an issue. They gave me the shot of novacain and about 5-10 minutes later they came in and started their work.

The only tough part was sitting there for an hour or so with all that smoke coming out of my mouth...

the next 4 hours will have my own experience.. wish me good luck as I'm worried like usual heh..

thanks for sharing your experience as well.

i think it should be naturally possible, at some stage, that the pulp builds surrounding bone after an advanced decay.. [/me thinking]

I took 2 x-rays 1) prior 2) after. it was close to the pulp, and after the filling it went even closer since the previous temp filling wasn't so nice and some cleaning was needed.

There was a mirror in front of me, so I could watch everything from A to Z. This made it far less boring and felt quicker than previous ones where I couldn't see what the dentist is doing.

the dentist was amazing, he took his time and explained the steps. the clinic was very clean and new equipments.

I was shocked by the bill, was expecting ~2000AED, but it was only 500AED (136.15 USD)!

I got a root canal.
In my experience I was in so much pain that everytime the dentist scraped more away - it was a RELIEF.
It was the best dental experience of my life.

It was capped off with a toof of GOLD.

I got bling.
