another thing I've noticed... when I load rdesktop, the graphical login flashes for a second which takes up the whole screen (all microsoft blue and everything)
is there another setting in windows I missed? |

for the sound check your .vmx file. look for these settings and comments out as needed
sound.present = "TRUE"
sound.virtualDev = "es1371"
sound.filename = "-1"
sound.autodetect = "TRUE"
Keep in mind my setup is an ubuntu 7.10 host w/ XP as the guest.
so you're saying I should comment those out?
I have all of those lines, but winamp and mediaplayer (or anything else that makes sounds besides the system) won't work. codecs are there... device manager says it has sound... even the sound control panel says it has sound (though it says it's Microsoft RDP Sound driver)
don't expect stellar sound within the vm, but it will work. check for the above entries... if they are missing add them. |

<user> and <pass> of course have the real user and password replaced in the actual link.

FYI: my backgrounds are black... and I should have an Autobot logo as my linux desktop wallpaper
That is odd. Maybe try -f or -B in your rdesktop command line.
As for sound, does sound work when you have the vmware-console open and connected to the guest machine?
You could also try -r sound:local in your rdesktop command line. |

sound does work... like the startup sound and log-off sounds, but not from applications that are expecting wave-out or direct-sound. They don't seem to like the RDP sound driver. I'll play with the switches for rdesktop and see if I can't get the massive window to go away.
and all of those sound lines are in the vmx file |

That's strange. I don't get a window at all.
I get an constant, annoying flicker around the taskbar, but no window. |

I think I can reproduce the problem, Slymer, forget my earlier suggestions. I get a fullscreen window similar to what you're seeing by leaving the VM logged on when I connect with rdesktop.
Try logging off Windows before trying to start rdesktop.

That is normal, it only shows while rdesktop logs you on. If you omit your password from the rdesktop command line, it stays onscreen until you enter it. |

I start the VM... once it's booted... I log in and log off... close it... then I load rdesktop. if I don't log in and log off first, I can't log in with rdesktop. |

Then I'm out of ideas.
And I was so pleased when I could duplicate the situation too. I guess that's an entirely different problem with the same symptoms. I hate those. |
