So, I've been trying to find ways to optimize bandwidth at 2 of my sites. Fractional T1 @256k.

Previous thread about optimizing CIFS. Talked with my corporate network guy for a while. Several emails later, I get this.

Quote:
Getting Layer 3 core routing up there, that would divert traffic off the edge segment that doesn't need to go out that way maybe?

This is beyond my understanding of networking. Anyone care to explain?

I have a Cisco 2600 series router and 3 Cisco Catalyst 2950 switches here. Am I capable of what he's talking about?

What is he talking about?

EDIT:
Alright done some reading and the 2950 switch that I have does not do Layer 3....so the screws me, cause no way will I convince them to purchase a new set of switches.

You can use your router to do that.

I think what he is saying is use Layer 3 (router) to choose the traffic that goes into your sites.

For example if you are not hosting an FTP block your FTP ports, or rather ignore that traffic.

Your 2950's do not have Layer 3 capabilities, but they do have QoS, so configure that to shape your traffic patterns.
