Several times, judging by further research. It appears that this has been going on for some time now, with Equifax frequently popping up as the SSL vendor of choice for would-be crooks. The only conclusion one can draw is that Equifax doesn't really care who buys certificates, as long as there's money to be made from selling them.

I don't know if this article is at all related to what I went through here:

http://www.littleblackdog.com/viewtopic.php?t=46926&start=0

But if it is a mention that not only does it try and trick you by displaying that little padlock, it just plain tries to wear you down by constantly bombarding you with alerts and pop ups every couple of minutes. All caused by viruses (? might be using wrong official term) that somehow get onto your computer. Honestly, if it hadn't been for the huge coincidence that I just happened to join this site a week or two before it happened I think I may have broken down and paid, still thinking that it was legit. Hats off to you guys again and nice article. Just re-enforces a feeling I have been cultivating for some time... always assume your computer is lying to you in some form or another.

You are making things way way way too complicated

pretty much everyone is out to screw you, ever single day.

they prey upon your hopes and fears.

am I big enough, is my girlfriend satisfied, is my computer infected?!?!

thats what makes spam worthwhile

what is sad about this article is the fact that some of the people who are supposed to be protecting us, have instead sold us out.

YOU TOO can be respectable if you just pay us enough money...

maybe equifax read one too many spams...

There really needs to be two different types of protection that the consumer needs to be aware of.

1. Is the connection between your computer and the server secure
2. Have the credentials of the vendor been verified...is he a legitimate seller?

Most users have been trained to look for the padlock. It's almost like we need two locks now.

This is exactly why I thought this was a newsworthy item.

What's sad is alot of uninformed users still believe that the padlock == safe site to buy from.

I personally have been doing my best to tell everyone I meet not to trust the shiny golden padlock and to only buy from sites that they trust and have a good reputation. i.e. Like M$, HP, etc.
