How To Kill Windows Vista Security Center:
1. Open a command prompt.
2. GoTo the Root Directory, then "cd windows\system32".
3. Run the following commands:
takeown /f wscapi.dll
takeown /f wscsvc.dll
takeown /f wscui.cpl 4. You now have ownership of the files. Go into the system32 directory in Explorer and right click each file. Select properties, go to the security tab and add an entry for everyone and give them full access permissions.
5. Disable the Security Center Service via Services.msc.
6. In the system32 folder rename the three mentioned dll's (change their file extension to .old or .bak).
7. Delete the Security Center permanently with Command Prompt:
"REG DELETE HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\WSCSVC /F", hit enter and reboot, OR in the Registry Editor right click and delete the key.
8. Profit!
Disclaimer(s): This is not recommended for Windows Vista Media Center Edition, where the Media Center itself is dependent upon the wcsapi.dll
Use at your own risk. The author assumes no responsibility for damage you may cause if you can't read and don't do exactly what I said. |

Add Registry Editor to Control Panel in Windows Vista & XP:
Open your text editor of choice and copy/paste the following:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{77708248-f839-436b-8919-527c410f48b9}]
@="Registry Editor"
"InfoTip"="Starts the Registry Editor"
"System.ControlPanel.Category"="5"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{77708248-f839-436b-8919-527c410f48b9}\DefaultIcon]
@="%SYSTEMROOT%\\regedit.exe"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{77708248-f839-436b-8919-527c410f48b9}\Shell]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{77708248-f839-436b-8919-527c410f48b9}\Shell\Open]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{77708248-f839-436b-8919-527c410f48b9}\Shell\Open\Command]
@=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,74,00,25,\
00,5c,00,72,00,65,00,67,00,65,00,64,00,69,00,74,00,2e,00,65,00,78,00,65,00,\
00,00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace\{77708248-f839-436b-8919-527c410f48b9}]
@="Add Registry Editor to Control Panel"
Save as AddRegedit.reg (or anything with the dot reg extension) to a location of choice and, in Explorer, double-click the file and accept when prompted with the dreaded "Are you sure".
The Registry Editor will now show up in your Control Panel, whether you use the new Control Panel Home/System Maintenance or Classic View. |

ooo... there's an interesting one... personally I use the keyboard too much and just run it from the run dialog... but for mouse freaks that would be a nice touch |

Run dialog? I have Regedit bound to Ctrl+Alt+R. |

yeah honestly, just open a terminal and "vi /etc/..." wait people use vista?
registry editor is the only response geeks have to the horribly written programs out there that set flags that shouldn't be, or vice versa, and don't give you a way to change it... not to mention malicious programs that don't want you to change settings... (like vista)
if ever I'm not able to load regedit on windows, they best have a replacement for the registry that I can edit available. |

They are not all horribly written programs (though most are), many are flagged as horrid when really, MicroSoft merely made bad decisions in their default settings. By default, they treat everyone like a N00b that was born yesterday.
For example, why in Sam Fucking Hell did they delete Display Settings from the Control Panel?
You can add it back in here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Panel\don't load
Delete this key: desk.cpl

I guess I am a reluctant mouse freak. I used to have Regedit and Services on my Quick Launch Bar |

Ok, I did this and I found that I still had to take ownership of the system32 folder prior to renaming the file. On the command line
C:\Windows\System32>takeown /f wscapi.dll
SUCCESS: The file (or folder): "C:\Windows\System32\wscapi.dll" now owned by
C:\Windows\System32>takeown /f wscsvc.dll
SUCCESS: The file (or folder): "C:\Windows\System32\wscsvc.dll" now owned by
C:\Windows\System32>takeown /f wscui.cpl
SUCCESS: The file (or folder): "C:\Windows\System32\wscui.cpl" now owned by
so either you need to reboot before step 4 or I guess it was in memory and I should have waited. |
