|
Many of my peripherals came with CDs that install drivers and proprietary software, but they no longer work in Windows Vista. For example, both my HP psc 950® and Microsoft IntelliMouse© Optical do not allow the installation CD, presumably because Windows already installed everything needed to use those devices.
However, every time I click the back (left) button on the mouse, it goes 2 clicks backward instead of just once, and that is getting quite frustrating. There are no settings that tell it to do that, or not do that.
The all-in-one printer won't work at all. FuKKing Windows® Vista© >.<
To tell the truth, if I wasn't able to turn Windows Defender OFF, I would have scrapped Vista altogether, it has been that annoying.
I think it's their worst OS ever. Even Win 3.2 was better... |

It's absolutely awful, with no redeeming features. Prettiness - and there's no denying, Vista is pretty - is not necessary. Functionality is.
I gave it a try. I used the laptop (IBM ThinkPad, hardly obscure hardware) I'm using right now to type this post, which currently runs Windows XP. On this laptop I have Virtual PC installed. I installed Vista Business inside a VPC session, as well as natively on the laptop, on a spare hard disk I had kicking around.
Vista ran faster and smoother inside an emulated virtual machine (with 512MB RAM) than it did natively on the laptop (with 2GB RAM).
Vista's token nod towards "security" is to have incessant "Are you completely, utterly, irrevocably sure you really, really, really want to do that?" prompts appear at every juncture, whose net effect will be solely to train people through repetition to click "Yes I want to do this" unthinkingly. "Are you sure you wish to infect your computer with malware?" ...click...
Oh, and don't get me started on integrated DRM and HDMI-compliance and subsequent content degradation. That's a separate rant, which has already been much better written by Eric Flint elsewhere. |

I am not using Vista by choice, I am using it as a matter of "you have to keep up with it if you want to survive".
It's almost as slow and clunky as dialup *shudder*. Videos won't display smoothly. That is unfathomable with 2 Goddamm Gigs of RAM
So, I've decided to make this a positive thread, and instead of just bitching about it, let's revive the spirit of LWD/LBD and start recommending changes to make Vista more tolerable.
Is this the first Vista Evil Tips and Tweaks?
How To Kill Windows Vista Security Center:
1. Open a command prompt.
2. GoTo the Root Directory, then "cd windows\system32".
3. Run the following commands:
takeown /f wscapi.dll
takeown /f wscsvc.dll
takeown /f wscui.cpl
4. You now have ownership of the files. Go into the system32 directory in Explorer and right click each file. Select properties, go to the security tab and add an entry for everyone and give them full access permissions.
5. Disable the Security Center Service via Services.msc.
6. In the system32 folder rename the three mentioned dll's (change their file extension to .old or .bak).
7. Delete the Security Center permanently with Command Prompt:
"REG DELETE HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\WSCSVC /F", hit enter and reboot, OR in the Registry Editor right click and delete the key.
8. Profit!
Disclaimer: This is not recommended for Windows Vista Media Center Edition, where the Media Center itself is dependent upon the wcsapi.dll
Use at your own risk. The author assumes no responsibility for damage you may cause if you can't fukking read and do exactly what I said. |

Start a new thread and I'll make it sticky. |

Vista to me is a ken to reading a Douglas Adams book. Economy of words and processes not relative nor important. |

I had fun with Vista for a while (8-9 months). It ran smoothly on my P4 3.0Ghurtz with 3GB of RAM... but, i had little annoyances, like network between Vista and XP that was slow, small things that were not working correctly... so i switched back to the good ol' XP last weekend and man, does it feel good! Like putting on old shoes... or having make-up sex after a fight with your girlfriend.
What? |
