Nintendo has announced they will discontinue hardware support on the Famicom October 31, 2007, 24 years after it was released.
Who knew it was still supported? |

There is a silver lining however (according to Nintendo). With the Wii Virtual Console allowing for downloadable releases of classic NES, SNES, and Nintendo 64 games, you'll be able to continue enjoying the games long after the original systems have died. Unfortunately, this doesn't take into account needing to buy the games a second time and also the fact that the library selection pales in comparison to the full libraries of the host systems, but we can't win all the battles, right?
Wait a minute. There's a Wii Virtual Console? I must not have got that memo. |

Yep, one of the best things about it. You can download tons of older games (for a fee) and play them on the Wii. If you turn the wii controller sideways it works like an orginal NEW controller. They also have a plug in for it like the SNES controller for genesis, turbo grafix 16, and SNES games.
This one is pretty up to date

Yeah, but it's a real rip-off. The games are way too expensive. You're better off with ROMs and a good emulator... or find an old Nintendo system on eBay. The thing was build like a tank. |

I don't know, it's $5 for a NES game, up to $10 (I think) for some of the other systems. It doesn't seem to pricey to me for a legal copy of a game I can run on a modern console, with a wireless controller. |
