I bought a second Hard drive from New Egg for extra storage.
Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600JB 160GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive - OEM Item #: N82E16822144203
http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=344
My system is: Windows XP SP2, 512MB RAM, Intel PIII 800Mhz

Device Manager Sees it...

My Computer/Windows Explorer does Not see it...

What am I doing wrong? I have bought HD's before and boom, they install and work. Sad

Did you add it in the Disk Management under Computer Management ever?

Since I don't know how to do that... that would be a no. Confused

How can I do that? And thank you for responding!

Right click on my computer, select manage.. (or go to administraive control panel)

Computer management should show up.

Select Disk Management. I don't remember if a wizard pops up if it sees a new drive, or you need to partition it by right clicking on the new drive.

either way that should get you were you need to be.

Thank you for the help... Apparently my computer did not like that it was over 137GB, but the software I downloaded from WD set it up and it works fine now. Thanks very much. The WD software essentially did what disk mgmt did, more in a caveman automatic type way. Thanks!

that might not help

I had this problem a while back with a hard drive..

I literally had to use some WD drivers so that winders could see the whole damned thing..

I'm just waiting for the new "no-movining-parts" drives that I've been hearing rumors about... Smile

Is your BIOS up to date, or are you still running something from the last century?

buyah!! last century here... but it does see the 300GB drive I have installed now. I remember the last time I had issues with the BIOS limits... was on a 386 when I tried to install a 520MB hard drive. ahh... those were the days... OnTrack BIOS overlay drivers... fun!

I am on SP2. It was the WD software that mentioned 137MB... and it did not partition it either... It shows 149GB. Hmm

Fathertyme... WD Software I downloaded did make winders see it. It is working fine now, and I am using Karen's Replicator to back up now! Thanks to you guys, I have automated backup now. Appreciate ya. Smile
