I don't know if it's still around, but there was some good software called SpinWrite that could take a very ugly drive and format around any bad sectors etc...
I would throw it away and get another one if I were you. |

spinrite won't fix the problem you have at the moment.
what you need is to get the drive on an ide cable into a computer
and run HDD Health to see if the drive is dead or dying.
if it's ok, then fdisk and format it.
once it's done that correctly, then spinrite will do the checking of the drive for you.
and once it's been really worked over, check the HDD Health to see if it survived.
then use it the drive for your precious data that isn't backed up yet. |

I don't have a desktop computer, so I can't format it before putting it in the external case. The external case is my only access to it. |

Update:
I bought a new hard drive and stuck it in the external hard drive case. Everything went smoothly, and I now have an extra 250G room in my house. Yay! |
