I have been reading all types of stuff and am just getting more confused.
Just for the fun of it I thought I would install a forum and found out I couldn't get to the root on my ISP's site that my little web page is on.
So I thought I would install it on a old computer and make it a server.
I have Suse 10.2 installed on it.
I have 2 computers with Windows XP
They are all hooked to a D-Link router that's connected to the internet.
I think I need a LAMP server setup but then do I have to make a network on the XP machines, some how I started reading about SOHO & Network File Servers and I don't think I want that, or Do I ?

Why do you need root access to install a forum?

I would just sign up for a $2.99 hosting plan somewhere and go with that rather than trying to run your own server, unless you are just wanting to do it for the fun of it.

that's my reason... though I haven't done the forum thing on mine yet (and probably won't... more likely to do a blog) but there are some bragging rights that come with running your own server Very Happy

True, unless your ISP expressly forbids it and cuts you off (which most do) Wink

The phpBB forum download wouldn't install right.
When I would open it for the final setup, it was just a bunch of code.
It is just for the fun of it.
I've gone ahead and started the Web & Lamp server in Suse and it's listening, so I'm happy so far !

You probably have not configured the PHPBB forum correctly. You have to associate the .php files with either Apache or IIS for your website to be translated, otherwise you will just look at the raw untranslated code.

I could walk you through how to do this in IIS, but I am afraid I haven't had to do this in Apache yet.

Basically all it is is putting the php extension into the configuration file for your web service and then you should be good to go.

Hope this helps
