|
I had both front tyres on my ride (front-wheel drive) replaced today, and the new ones look a bit odd. The car was wearing Pirelli P7 all round; it's now wearing Dunlop SP Sport 3000 on the front.
They don't have rotational indicators on the walls (nor did the originals), but do have a "mount this side out" instruction on one wall.
The tread pattern is thus reversed between the two wheels. The part of the pattern that I can see (the bit towards the outside edge) points towards the front of the car on the right-hand side tyre, and towards the back of the car on the left-hand side tyre.
When I queried this, the tyre fitter muttered something about "asymmetric" something-or-other (didn't catch it all) and left it at that.
Any idea what he might have meant, and if I need to be concerned about the difference in tread direction? |

Never mind. I found out the answer.
Look down at the tyre. Note the tread pattern. Now spin the tyre 180°. Note the tread pattern. It's the same. The left-hand side and right-hand side are rotational reflections of each other, not mirror images.
This is, presumably, why there is the "mount this side out" instruction, rather than rotational indicators. |

I was going to try to explain that. The tread pattern needs to be symmetrical, not parallel, in order for the traction to be best in bad conditions. |

You have to be careful about this because there are some tires that are indeed directional and can and should only be mounted with the tread facing a certain way. |

Exile is correct. Thows tyres have markings on the to point out the direction the tyre should roll. I've never seen aything other than a big arrow on the tyreside.

make sure not to get a directional tire for your spare... or if you do, get two of them one left and one right. |
