Yesterday as I was driving ~55mph (ok my 70) I went to slow down..and slam..to the floor. No brake pressure, no brakes.

I quickly down shifted and lifted on e brake lever to slow down. I pulled into a place to park and poppy the hood after coming to a slow, but non collision involved stopped. The master cylinder fluid reservoir was dislodged from the master cylinder...about 1/2 inch up and leaked fluid out.

I drove it from there (slowly) and using down shifting and e brake to slow down/stop to my buddies house where the "spare" Accords are and swapped master cylinders. Ahh it's good to have brake pedal pressure Smile

And we are surprised that when slamming on the break petal didn't work, he didn't try slamming on the gas, thinking that maybe the two got switched by gnomes when he wasn't looking under the dash...

it is apparently an all to common mistake when one petal doesn't work to go back to pressing the one that does.

Dags, I didn't even consider hitting the gas Undecided

It is disconcerting to hit the brakes and have no response...had it been a situation where i had to stop in 30 ft, it wouldn't have happened. Luckily I had 1/2 mile in front of me and plenty of time. Down shifting is always a good way to slow down -- I learnt that on mountains.

I used to be able to bring my truck down from 60mph to 20 mph faster via down shifting then braking...

never lost traction when I down shifted... lost it all the time slamming on the brakes (what with the bald tires, and snow and ice and all)

but down shifting won't get you to 0mph.

but if the Ebrake works, you can get by with that for a short trip, no problem.

You should've thrown out the anchor... Wink SmileBig Smile

Where are the piccies?! Sad Smile

Glad you didn't panic and got slowed down without hitting/hurting anyone. Did you ever find the cause of why yer reservoir failed like that? There should've been a bolt that keeps the reservoir secured to the master cylinder. Shocking Smile

Must've been that pesky murfCAT...he's been looking to git people to spend more monay on broked parts...er, I mean brake parts. Wink SmileEvil Smile

It's when yer shifting up and miss the higher gear and putting it in the lower gear...ruins yer tranny or engine...or both. Hence the money shift. Sad SmileShocking SmileBlush Smile

Well, it's not like thats a bolt I would look to tighten when I did everything else on the car.. but, I would venture that the nut has been vibrating loose for some time. It wasn't even hand tight Sad
