So, I'm remodeling a bathroom, which.. is kind of a hobby Smile

anyways, I could use a little knowledge, so lets see whats out there.

2 things.

1) I pulled some paneling off the wall. Anyone know of the best way to get the old glue and such off the wall? For that fact, the wallboard underneath it ripped (just the top layer) in several places... is there an easy fix?

2) I pulled off some old wallpaper to reveal the old un-finished wall behind it. Anyone know what the easiest way to apply texture to such an expanse?!

Thats it... Thanks

Fear is actually sub-floor deep into a remodel. Shocked
this wall you speak of..... is it sheetrock? Most DIY stories will rent a texture sprayer that will do the job in no tyme.

*however* do your self a favor and practice before doing the walls. You'll thank yourself later.

If you can believe it, I remodeled my entire master bath myself. Gutted down all the tile and put up new wood, wallboard, shower, tile, counters, mirrors, sinks, the works. Took me a huge amount of time and I save $$$ cause I did the labor myself.

Ordered most of the expensive stuff on the internet.

The walls- how big, how ruined?
What use? Are they going to be wet or possibly damp?
Do you own the house? or selling it in the next 5 years? Smile

lets see... 2 walls, one 6 feet long, one about 4 feet long, really not too bad looking, a couple gouges, but the rips are mostly surface.

It's a half bath, so toilet and sink. They really should stay fairly dry

and yes, we own the house, and have no plans At this tyme, of selling it

Where's the computer going? Personally I'd put it under the sink so you can tap into the existing plumbing for some kick-ass water cooling action.

Piccies would be handy to help gauge how much work needs to be done. Wink SmileBig Smile

What kind of budget are we looking at?
Are you looking to replace fixtures like the sink, faucet, mirror, toilet?
Since it's a half bath, I take it that it's not gonna be needed fer awhile?
Are you doing the floors and ceiling, too?
Is the ceiling textured? If so, are you looking to keep it that way or are you gonna untexture it?
Do you have a vent fan in the bathroom? If not, are you looking to put one in?
Do you have any outlets in the bathroom? If so, you might be required under code to put in a GFCI (ground fault circuit interupt) one in it's place. I'd do it whether or not it was required by code anyways... Wink SmileBig Smile
Have you considered replacing yer incandescent lamps with the compact florescent bulbs? Lowe's and Walmart have the globe version so they look like they belong in there vs the curly versions.
Are you looking to paint or wallpaper? Borders? Wink Smile

I'm @ work right now.. I'll look into taking some later

BamZipPow wrote:

at this tyme, we are looking at replacing only the toilet. The sink, faucet, and mirror might come at a later tyme, but its not in the budge ATM

BamZipPow wrote:

Actually, while its only a half bath, it is the ONLY bathroom on the first floor, so it gets used rather heavily. So we don't want it out of commission for TOO long.. but its still usable right now (just not very attractive)

BamZipPow wrote:

The Floor will probably be ripped up, and replaced.. its just linoleum right now, and we have some tile on hand to replace it with.

BamZipPow wrote:

The ceiling IS textured, but not that popcorn crap. And we are going to leave it that way, tho we will probably put a couple coats of paint on it.

BamZipPow wrote:

No vent, but its on an outside wall, and has a REALLY nice window on it. So we are going to leave that part alone.

BamZipPow wrote:

We have only 1 outlet in the bathroom, and it was GFCI'd several years ago. Also, since we are not ripping walls out, re-running pipes, or wiring, we don't need a permit, hence legally they can't require us to change the socket.

Changing the entire lighting fixture is something that is being looked at. The decision hasn't been made, but its likely that we will pick up something for this.

Paint. Definitely!!!! My whole family detests wall paper *L*

Probably no borders, but thats mostly because I don't know Anything about them. We are also going to replace all the floorboards, because those are all about 30 years old, and look like crap!

To answer yer original questions...

Easy fix would be to just spackle over it, sand smooth, and then prime it fer painting or what not... Wink Smile

Easiest way would be to pull the old drywall out if it's that beat up and put up new drywall. Tape and float the joints. Prime and paint. Big Smile

I fergot to add one more question... Crown molding? Wink Smile

If it's a simple box room...it would be easy to do either borders or crown molding. Borders are cheap and easy to do. The hard part is picking it out...and having the main parties involved to agree to the pattern. Shocking Smile

Thats what I actually intend to do, my question is, is there an easy way to get rid of the old glue that held the paneling up? I've had that stuff gum up more than one chunk of sand paper in my day

ok, maybe I misspoke. When I said "unfinished" I meant that its bare drywall. unpainted, still its natural shade. No texture, nothing. So I don't need to pull the old drywall out, just prime and paint it, but its really FLAT and I'd like to put some texture on it (it seems to add to that "finished" look)

I think we are going to go with out the borders or crown molding. There isn't any in the rest of the house, and we don't want the bathroom to look too out of place. Tho.. I have to admit, when you said borders, I thought you were talking of molding.. so I'm not quite sure what you meant by that.
