It has been a long tyme since I posted any news on hardware. My apologies. I slack, and I know it. But I kind of look at it this way: I can improve a lot! Yay me.

Ok... here is a snippet:

You are looking at a benchtest. Higher numbers are good.

Core 2 Extreme QX6800 is currently Intels fastes CPU in Cinebench. It has 4 cores. It runs at 2.93 GHz.

Penryn is the next famely of processors from Intel. It has a 45nm architecture. Thats... very very small.

The results are pretty good for the Penryn. Especially since rumours say that the Penryn can be clocked a lot higher. The 45nm architecture should mean that, and less heat and power use.

I have no benchmark data on AMD's upcoming 4-core CPU (Barcelona). Rumour has it that the Penryn beats it easily. I hope not becouse I really like it when there is a tech-war...

funny thing is that to get something resembling the V8 platform, you gotta get a mac pro. doesn't seem to be any love from intel about when/if that platform will be truly available.

Same here but it's more price then capacity (although that helps too)

Are the V8's stock on those?

From what I understand V8 is Intels name for the concept of putting two quadcores in a desktop machine. And I think it will Fold like crazy.

The MacPros runs Xeons. Either two dual-core (codenamed Woodcrest) or two quadcore (codenamed Clovertown).

From my gleanings of the new AMD's, the Barcelona will be for the server family and the Phenom will be the Desktop version.

and I saw a sweet mobo for it here

Yeah. And the Barcelonas is the faster ones... and the rumors say Penryn (which ist he desktop version) beats it. Things look bleak for AMD. Sad

Glad I'm not building anything until the Fall, it'll give me time to let Intel and AMD fight it out !

Post Posted: Mon Jun 11, 2007 2:21 am   Post subject: AMD Barcelona update. Reply with quote Back to top

The people at Anandtech had an interesting article from Comdex up this morning.

Thay taked a little about AMD Barcelona:
Quote:
None of the partners we talked to are really impressed with Barcelona yet, but then again none of the true potential of the chip and chipsets have been realized due to CPU stepping issues, BIOS maturity, and generally low clock speeds. AMD simply hasn't gotten the process under control yet and after hearing our friends at the motherboard companies talk, AMD is close to near/total panic mode right now.

and

Quote:
The biggest story in all of this is that AMD is just not ready yet, the chips are not scaling well, and today it's looking like Intel may eat their lunch this year. AMD seems very optimistic with internal roadmaps showing 2.9GHz cores by Q1 2008, but everything we've seen or heard today makes this seem unlikely.

This is bad news, methings. And I'm mainly an Intel user. It must feel even worse for the AMD fans.
