Ed, I know you're running Mandriva at the moment, but I thought you might be interested in the release of Ubuntu Studio

Must be flavour of the year[s], as it has been the most popular distribution on distrowatch.com since early 2005.

Thanks for the tip. I'm not married to Mandriva especially when it borked up my power management on the craptop, at least when I shut off acpid it calmed that back down. So I don't have anything on that partition I care about.

This Ubuntu craze is really just that, some reason (I'm blaming marketing) there is what seems like a whole "generation" (if that word can even be used on the internet where age is usually irrelevant, exception made for the 12 year olds out there that think they are hot shit.) who thinks Ubuntu is Linux, when really it's contributions to the grand scheme of Linux are limited at best compared to the old school distro's like slack, Debian, even red hat and mandrake.

sooner or later the Ubuntu gates are going to crack open and the Linux users created in this marketing ploy will flood out into rest of the distributions. Debian, Mandrake, Slack, Gentoo, SUSE, all of them will spike in popularity. and Ubuntu will be remembered as the greatest FOSS Marketing scam ever.

Must we always go down this road? What makes Ubuntu a marketing scam? If they take a solid distribution like Debian, work to a regular release cycle and make many improvements, yet give away their efforts for free, how does that qualify as a scam? And what is wrong with that? Ubuntu is the most popular distribution at the moment, because it does what people want.

I think it is sad that you have such issues with a team forking your beloved Debian and rereleasing it with a few changes and upgrades - isn't that one of the core principles of the GPL? Why always rip on Ubuntu? Why not Fedora? Or even SUSE which started life as a German translation of Slackware.

If your problem is just its popularity, and you prefer to stick to something under the radar, that's your prerogative, but it certainly doesn't detract from all that Ubuntu has achieved, whether you like it or not.

Hate is such a strong word.

I appreciate the visibility they are bring to GNU/Linux... but appreciate some of their methods far far less. Enough to give the appearance of hate when I get on one topic, or when some one(s) like Jay and your self set me up for a good rant.

And Jay Don't go thinking that Ubuntu is alone on that list, you just never asked me how I felt about Gentoo, Slack, SUSE (I actually like what I've seen of SUSE but I've not really used it that much) or any other distro.

Looks like their server is down right now. When I checked yesterday it was very slow. They must be getting hammered right now....

I might throw this up on an old box just to check it out. I've been interested in checking out a linux-based video NLE.

UK mirror is doing pretty well for a download of the ISO, today.

Gonna chuck it on the laptop in place of Mandriva. I've seen enough of Mandriva I think. Might as well see how much better this distro is for configuring up audio.

And what do you know. It's very nice indeed.

The power management works better than Mandriva. So far the sound has been working fine, and the first thing most of the media apps did upon starting was to ask me if I'd like to go search for codecs. Very civilised.

Network is working better than SuSE ever did, and graphically it seems happy enough. A little scare on setup with a disk repair, but overall rather nice.

Good stuff. Have you tried any of the audio software? Would be interested on how you rate it compared to the Mac stuff you have.
